The albums’ new digital releases are part of the on-going celebration surrounding the 20th anniversary of the franchise’s debut. The celebration kicked off in 2021, when series creator Hiromu Arakawa announced her latest manga, Yomi No Tsugai, a fantasy series set in a world inspired by feudal Japan. The anniversary festivities continued into 2022, when two new live-action movies, The Vengeance of Scar and The Last Transmutation, where unexpectedly announced early in the year. The two movies serve as a direct sequel to the franchise’s original 2017 live-action adaptation, and feature the return of Ryosuke Yamada and Atomu Mizuishi, who will reprise their roles as the series’ two central protagonists, the brothers Edward and Alphonse Elric. Ping Pong director Fumihiko Sori will also return to direct both movies, which will premiere in Japan on May 20 and June 24, respectively.
Fullmetal Alchemist was created by Arakawa in 2001 and was one of the most popular and acclaimed titles of the anime boom period of the early 2000s. Arakawa’s manga was first adapted into an anime in 2003, but since this series was created before the manga was completed, it diverged wildly from the source material. In 2009, a second anime series, entitled Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, was created to be a more faithful adaptation of Arakawa’s now finished story. While the original anime was a huge success at the time, the rebooted series is now generally regarded as the better of the two adaptations.
Both shows are now streaming on Hulu and Crunchyroll, while Arakawa’s manga is available in English from VIZ Media and Yen Press.
