New Girl Star Says It’s Too Soon For A Reunion Series

Cookbook Planner

Many popular sitcoms are getting reunion or reboot treatments with varied levels of success. However, Max Greenfield, who played Schmidt on New Girl, believes it’s too soon for any sort of revival.

Speaking to ComicBook while promoting his new Netflix film Unfrosted, Greenfield explained why a New Girl revival should be delayed. “It hasn’t been that long. I think people are rushing to do these reunions,” he said. “And I think… what did we wrap that show like six or seven years ago? So I think we’re going to wait on it. When Liz Meriwether, who created the show, when she has an idea or a script or a way to do it, I’m in. I think it’s on her. I don’t think it’s on Jake and his Spider-Man schedule. I think it’s more on Liz.”

New Girl: What Happened to Coach?

Throughout the run of New Girl, Coach was an ongoing presence, even when he wasn’t even technically on the show after he suddenly disappeared twice.

Lamorne Morris, who played Winston Bishop in New Girl, is also open to returning. However, he says a good premise is required. “I’m assuming it was also a tough job because I feel like every episode was on point,” he said of the creative team. “It takes brilliant writers and a lot of hard work to accomplish that. It’s easy for me as a cast member to say, ‘Oh, yeah, I would love to do another,’ because I just get to play and perform, but someone’s got to create that atmosphere.”

Some Cast Members Are Hesitant About a New Girl Revival

Jake Johnson, who appeared as Nick Miller in the series, is not enthusiastic about a New Girl reunion or reboot. “I don’t like the idea of all of us sitting on a couch and hugging in front of cameras and then getting sincere and being like, ‘What Max Greenfield means to me’ with him right there,” he explained. “All that feels really bizarre to me, as well as the idea of doing a, ‘Let’s get the gang back together.’ And now it’s like, ‘Nick Miller’s definitely fatter.’ I’m thinking that we’re all with our fake kids.”

New Girl’s Zooey Deschanel is also hesitant to reprise her role as Jess but hasn’t completely shut down the possibility. “It kind of depends on the circumstance,” she said in a 2023 interview. “I wouldn’t want to spend the rest of my life doing reboots, but I definitely had a wonderful time and would be very happy to revisit.”

New Girl ran for seven seasons on Fox from 2011 to 2018. The show revolves around Jess (Deschanel), a quirky, naive young woman who moves in with three single guys after a rough breakup. Together with Jess’s best friend, Cece (Hannah Simone), the group slowly becomes an unlikely, dysfunctional family.

All seven seasons of New Girl are streaming on Hulu.
