Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness actor Charlize Theron shows off her look in character as the mysterious Clea in a behind-the-scenes tweet.
Charlize Theron gave fans a behind-the-scenes look at her Clea costume from the character’s cameo appearance in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Theron tweeted a short video showcasing Clea’s wardrobe and makeup. The video provides an up-close look at all the details in the character’s costume, giving audience members time to examine it as they might not have been able to in the brief mid-credits scene.
Clea made her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in the mid-credits sequence of Doctor Strange 2. In stopping Wanda from draining America Chavez’s powers, Doctor Strange relied on the forbidden art of Dreamwalking to inhabit the body of one of his multiversal doppelgängers. These acts resulted in a collision of two universes, catching the attention of Clea. At the end of the film, she confronts Strange before opening a portal to the Dark Dimension seen in 2016’s Doctor Strange, telling him that the two of them have to fix the problem.
Created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, Clea made her first appearance in the 1964 comic Strange Tales #126. She is a skilled magic user, Sorcerer Supreme of the Dark Dimension, and eventual wife of Doctor Strange. Screenwriter Michael Waldron recently discussed bringing Clea into the story at the end of Multiverse of Madness, explaining that her debut was always part of the plan. “I was thrilled to introduce [Charlize Theron] as Clea,” Waldron said. “Clea has been Strange’s counterpart in the comics for a long time. She’s an amazing sorcerer. She’s also his great love; she’s his wife at one point.”
Before Strange and Clea’s adventures could start, the book had to be closed on his love story with Rachel McAdams’ Christine Palmer. Doctor Strange’s adventure through the multiverse helps him confront the fact that he and Christine will never end up together, despite their love for each other, due to the incompatibility of their lives.
What Marvel has in store for both Clea and Doctor Strange is yet to be revealed. Benedict Cumberbatch, who headlines as Strange, has said he plans to take a break from acting shortly, but clarified that he would “absolutely” continue to play the Master of the Mystic Arts for another decade. “If they keep me, and it, interesting and keep him evolving and try to exercise his full potential as a character, I think there’s a lot of places for him to explore,” he explained. “So yeah, bring it on.”
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is currently playing in theaters.
