The Boys costume designer Laura Jean Shannon confirms The Deep’s own costume is a comment on female superhero suits.
Speaking to Jump Cut Online, Shannon discussed the subversion of gender stereotypes present in the costume for Chase Crawford’s The Deep. When asked if she felt the shift was overdue, Shannon responded, “Heck yeah I did! Thank you very much. I call that equal opportunity objectification.” She continued, “Like you said, we’ve been patting boobs and butts and making ladies look luscious forever. So it was actually really exciting to be given the opportunity to kind of hyper-sexualize a male character in The Boys, and really lean into Chase’s great looks.”
Shannon commented further on how Crawford’s physique helped to inform the final costume design. “He’s a real team player too, I’m here to tell you,” she said. “And it’s funny as his suit is the only one that doesn’t have sleeves on the costume of any kind, other than the Starlight 2.0 costume (which is a story point that we’re objectifying her as per the branding machine.) So I really couldn’t help augment his muscle tone by creating any kind of muscle suit under there, so I tasked Chase with pumping his guns, (I mean he’s already perfect!) to become even more Adonis like.”
Shannon also discussed the work Crawford put into perfecting his look for his role. “[H]e did such a great job that when we got to our camera test for season one, his stunt guy Jeff (who’s awesome and ripped in his own right) saw Chase and you could see he was nervous. Every time before we started shooting, he started doing push-ups and pull-ups to try to get to the same place that Chase had pushed himself to, to really round out that suit.”
Based on the 2006 comic book series of the same name by acclaimed writer Garth Ennis and artist Darick Robertson, The Boys follows the exploits of the eponymous team of vigilantes as they wage a secret war against their world’s foremost costumed superheroes, The Seven, as well as their calculating corporate sponsors. The series’ third season is slated to mark the debut of Jensen Ackles as Soldier Boy, The Boys‘ own explosive version of Captain America. Fans have already been given one glimpse at Ackles’ Soldier Boy both in his World War II era costume and in action, as well as the promise that his character will play a pivotal role in the events to come.
Audiences can catch all the titillating action when The Boys Season 3 premieres on Prime Video on June 3.
