A character’s starting class in Elden Ring determines their initial weapons and stats and as such shapes their playstyle in the early game. They each occupy different niches, emphasizing different combinations of stats and equipment to craft ten very different experiences in the early game.
The Confessor is a hybrid character class who relies on the Faith stat, wielding weaponry and divine Incantations to defeat their foes. Like all Elden Ring classes, it is balanced around its core stats, giving it parity with other classes. Nonetheless, starting as a Confessor has its upsides and downsides that might dissuade or encourage some players.
6 It’s The Most Balanced Faith Class
Faith is one of the main casting stats in Elden Ring, associated with Holy, Fire, and Incantation spells. The Confessor is one of two classes based around Faith. They begin with a 14 in the stat and an Incantation-casting Finger Seal, as well as two Incantations. The other faith-based class is the Prophet, who use Faith as their true core.
Although not as Faithful as the Prophet, the Confessor is a much more well-rounded and balanced class, with more well-rounded abilties. Not as good as specialist classes at one big thing, it is nonetheless designed for a combination of Faith abilities and either Strength or Dexterity-based skills, which both start at a respectable 12.
5 Starting With Healing Magic
One advantage of Incantations over Sorceries, the other type of spellcasting, is that they include healing magic. Among the Confessor’s two starting Incantations is the ‘Urgent Heal’ spell. It is far from the most impactful heal in the game, with the health recovery being mimimal, but it has its uses.
Players can use it as a fallback when they run out of Flasks of Crimson Tears, or cast it if they take some damage in a fight but not enough to justify using their flask. It is also the fastest healing spell to cast, giving it distinct utility in combat when the player might struggle to heal through other means.
4 The Broadsword Is A Solid Starting Weapon
Elden Ring‘s open world is vast, and loot can be spread thin across it. A player’s starting equipment may need to last them through hours of the game before they find something better. Therefore, the player needs to be comfortable with their starter gear, and it has to be usable in a number of situations.
The Confessor’s starting Broadsword isn’t the most remarkable starting weapon in the game, and even pales in comparison to some more interesting weapons of other classes. However, it is reasonably quick, deals good damage, and has a simple moveset that is fairly flexible and versatile. As such, it is a dependable weapon that can easily last the player until they find a more powerful weapon.
3 Confessor Begins With Some Of The Best Stealth In The Game
Stealth is an addition Elden Ring made to the standard Dark Souls formula, importing parts of the system from Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. Although Elden Ring is not a stealth game, and many foes do need to be fought head-on, the game’s open world and dungeons do contain plenty of enemies players can sneak past or around.
Stealth is almost uniform throughout Elden Ring, but the Confessor begins with the ‘Assassin’s Approach’ Incantation. This makes their footsteps quieter and makes falling less dangerous. Although it will not help against bosses, this Incantation can make parts of the open world immensely easier, and gives the player more options when dealing with foes.
2 Early Access To A Magic Tutor
The Confessor’s starting spell selection isn’t overly impressive and is limited to a low-level heal and a sneaking spell. Compared with other spellcasting classes, who tend to begin with damaging spells or, in the Prophet’s case, a much more impressive healing spell, the Confessor can feel relatively weak
However, it isn’t hard to find a teacher for Faith spells in Elden Ring. As soon as the player arrives at Roundtable Hold, they meet Brother Corhyn, who offers to sell them Incantations. Almost from the off, the player can customize their spell selection to suit their playstyle and Corhyn provides access to more spells the further down his plotline a player goes.
1 Its Hybrid Stats Are Well-Suited To A Buffing Playstyle
Incantations tend to be worse at dealing direct damage than Sorceries, with many of their damaging spells being weak, situational, or harder to use. However, they distinguish themselves with greater flexibility. In addition to healing, Incantations provide access to a wider variety of buffs and power-ups than Sorceries.
These buffs are less useful for a pure Faith build, like the sort a Prophet leans towards. For a Confessor, however, who leans towards using weaponry right from the start, they can be invaluable. Although the Confessor doesn’t start with any ways to improve their combat capabilities, they can find them in short order and be well-equipped to make use of some of the best Incantations in the game.
