Apple TV+’s upcoming “Godzilla and the Titans” MonsterVerse series adds WandaVision’s Matt Shakman as a director and executive producer.
After venturing into the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Disney+’s WandaVision, director Matt Shakman has his sights set on Legendary’s MonsterVerse.
According to Variety, Shakman has boarded Legendary Television’s untitled “Godzilla and the Titans” series, which is slated to stream on Apple TV+. Shakman will serve as an executive producer on the show, as well as direct its first two episodes.
Shakman is perhaps best known for WandaVision, Marvel Studios’ first Disney+ original series, having directed all nine of the show’s episodes. For his work on WandaVision, Shakman was nominated for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Directing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, as well as for the Directors Guild of America Award for Outstanding Directing – Miniseries or TV Film.
Shakman is also known for helming over 40 episodes of FX’s It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. His other directing credits include episodes of television shows like The Great, Game of Thrones, The Boys, Mad Men and Fargo. In 2021, Shakman was tapped to direct the fourth film in producer J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek reboot series for Paramount Pictures. The still-unofficially-titled Star Trek 4 is currently slated for release on Dec. 22, 2023.
Legendary’s MonsterVerse franchise began with its 2014 film reboot of Godzilla. The kaiju-centric cinematic universe continued with 2017’s Kong: Skull Island, 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters and 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong. The franchise isn’t done just yet, as a sequel to Godzilla vs. Kong is currently in the works, with Adam Wingard returning to the director’s chair and Dan Stevens (Legion) being cast in the lead role.
In January 2022, Apple TV+ ordered a live-action Godzilla series — which is said to feature other “Titans” from the MonsterVerse — as part of a deal with Legendary. Chris Black and Matt Fraction serve as co-creators and executive producers, with Black also serving as showrunner. Shakman is the latest creative to join the series, which Variety describes as following “one family’s journey to uncover its buried secrets and a legacy linking them to the secret organization known as Monarch” in the aftermath of the “thunderous battle between Godzilla and the Titans that leveled San Francisco and the shocking new reality that monsters are real.”
That said, Apple TV+’s Godzilla-centric series isn’t the only small-screen project Legendary is developing as part of the MonsterVerse. An anime-inspired, King Kong-adjacent animated series titled Skull Island is currently in the works at Netflix.
