Hiding in the background of one particular scene from the new Disney+ original movie Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers is a nod to Sony Pictures Animation’s 2018 animated Marvel film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
At one point in Rescue Rangers, the iconic piece of street art Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) creates with his uncle, Aaron Davis (Mahershala Ali), early in Into the Spider-Verse‘s runtime is visible on a wall behind Chip and Dale. Addressing the Easter egg, Spider-Verse writer and producer Phil Lord tweeted, “Chip and Dale are canon.”
Into the Spider-Verse premiered in theaters on Dec. 14, 2018. The film follows Miles, who must become his universe’s new Spider-Man after being bitten by a radioactive spider and watching the original Spidey, Peter Parker (Chris Pine), die at the hands of the Kingpin (Liev Schreiber). Miles gets some help from other Spider-People from across the multiverse, including an alternate version of Peter (Jake Johnson) and Gwen Stacy/Spider-Woman (Hailee Steinfeld), Spider-Man Noir (Nicolas Cage), Peni Parker (Kimiko Glenn) and Spider-Ham (John Mulaney). The film was a massive success, taking home the Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film at the 91st Academy Awards.
Two sequels to Into the Spider-Verse are currently in the works. The first, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, is slated to release in theaters on June 2, 2023. The second, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, will follow suit on March 29, 2024, serving as the second part of Across the Spider-Verse‘s story. A Spider-Woman spinoff has also reportedly been in the works for a number of years now.
Meanwhile, based on the 1989-1990 animated series of the same name, Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers premiered on Disney+ on May 20. The film stars the aforementioned Mulaney opposite Andy Samberg as the voices of classic Disney characters Chip and Dale, respectively. Rescue Rangers‘ other cast members include the likes of Kiki Layne, Will Arnett, Eric Bana, Flula Borg, Dennis Haysbert, Keegan-Michael Key, Tress MacNeille, Seth Rogen and J.K. Simmons. Interestingly, Into the Spider-Verse isn’t the only Marvel property to get a shout-out in the film, with the character Tigra also making a cameo appearance.
