Chris Evans will forever be Captain America, but his first big film role was in Not Another Teen Movie, which he’s the least bit embarrassed about.
Chris Evans will forever be the face of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Captain America, but before he held America’s shield he showed his acting versatility by being part of various projects. One of those projects was a chapter in the series of parody films Not Another Teen Movie. It’s hardly a quality contender, yet Evans does not seem bothered by that.
His path to becoming the face of MCU’s Captain America saw him play many other roles before, including another Marvel favorite, the Human Torch in 2005’s Fantastic Four. But one of his very first roles on a global scale was in Not Another Teen Movie. The film was a nonsense parody of teen movies from the ’80s and ’90s that became popular. Not Another Teen Movie is easily forgettable, but if one decides to revisit it, they might be surprised to see Evans playing the “popular jock” stereotype role. But he wasn’t at all miscast.
If anything, Evans has proved that his ability to take on different roles, specifically comedy, is outstanding. Not Another Teen Movie might be quite a stretch, but since then, he’s been in several comedy films, including Playing It Cool, What’s Your Number? and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. Unlike other big stars that keep to a unique style of acting that easily stands out, Evans presents the audience with a versatile style of acting, either in quality dramas like Puncture and the series Defending Jacob or as a disguised villain in Knives Out.
But if any other star might want Not Another Teen Movie to disappear from existence, Evans seems to be quite cool about it. “You do what you gotta do to earn your stripes,” he laughed in an interview with Esquire. “At the time, I was so thrilled to be a part of the movie, it didn’t even cross my mind that it was some sort of, like, an artistic compromise or something.” The movie features a scene where Evans wears a fake whipped cream bikini and a banana on the backside of his body to win the affection of his love interest. “I thought it was hilarious at the time,” he concluded.
Such a statement only cements Evans’ talent, as he is able to understand that in that particular role no one would expect an Oscar-worthy performance, and by not taking himself too seriously, he was able to go from forgettable teen jock to one of the most globally recognizable film roles of all time. That’s quite the feat. Now that he stepped away from Captain America, fans can be sure he will continue to navigate his career toward many quality-driven projects, and hopefully, some more comedy roles.
