Fighting game classic Tekken2 was recently listed for sale on the PlayStation storefront, retailing for the modest price of just $10,000.
Tekken fans are no strangers to paying a bit more than expected to enjoy the iconic fighting game series, between season passes and post-launch DLC packs, but a recent Tekken2 listing from Sony would make even the wealthiest Tekken enthusiast blush.
As spotted by Twitter user TheKBGamer, Tekken2‘s price on digital PlayStation platforms was accidentally set at a staggering $9,999. Tekken2 is one of the most widely beloved fighting games of all time, but it’s probably not quite worth $10,000. For reference, that’s significantly higher than the starting bid for a gold-plated Nintendo Wii commissioned for the Royal Family.
The exorbitant listed price for Tekken2 is, of course, just a silly mistake. A quick glance at the PlayStation Store confirms that there’s no way to actually buy Tekken2 on its own. The game was added to current-generation PlayStation consoles as part of Sony’s relaunch of PlayStation Plus. That fact didn’t get in the way of Tekken series director and Tekken2 voice actor Katsuhiro Harada’s celebrations — his enthusiastic response to the ridiculous price point was simply “WHAT A MARVELOUS PRICE SONYYYYYYYY.”
Even at nearly $10,000, Tekken2‘s digital edition wouldn’t have been the most expensive game around. In 2021, a copy of the original The Legend of Zelda sold for more than $800,000, setting the record for the most expensive video game of all time. That record was broken just a few days later by a sealed copy of Super Mario 64, which sold for $1.5 million. While both those games command significantly higher prices than Tekken2, neither of them can claim to feature Kuma, a bear who can speak Japanese and is also a martial artist.
Tekken2 is almost certainly not worth $10,000, but it’s a matter of opinion whether or not it’s worth subscribing to the revamped PlayStation Plus service. While the new PS Plus boasts an impressive library, it’s been the source of some controversy among PlayStation owners for its convoluted pricing, streaming-only PlayStation 3 games, subpar versions of PlayStation 1 classics and frustrating lack of transparency.
Tekken2 fans don’t actually need to pay $10,000 to play the revered classic on PlayStation 4 and 5, they simply have to subscribe to PlayStation Plus Premium for $17.99 a month. The more recent Tekken 7 is available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Microsoft Windows. For the truly curious, at base MSRP, $10,000 could buy approximately 250 copies of Tekken 7.
