In a new clip from Thor: Love and Thunder, Natalie Portman’s God of Thunder Jane Foster wields Mjolnir with explosive, monster-smiting power.

A newly released clip from Thor: Love and Thunder shows Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster making use of a devastating new ability of the magical war hammer Mjolnir.

A one-minute non-stop action scene from the movie was shared on Twitter. The footage begins during a battle in a suburban neighborhood with Chris Hemsworth’s Thor spotting his former weapon Mjolnir and calling to it like a beloved pet, before it hurtles toward him straight through a monster, splitting it apart. Jane, in her new role as the God of Thunder, is then shown to be the one controlling Mjolnir, and in the course of the battle she takes out numerous enemies by allowing the hammer to split into projectile pieces before reforming and returning to her hand.

Although Mjolnir has never shown this ability before, it’s a clear progression from the moment that it was broken into pieces by Hela in Thor: Ragnarok, as the pieces separate along the cracks that still show on the hammer’s head from the damage. Thor wasn’t able to reforge his iconic weapon in the film, but he replaced it with the battleaxe Stormbreaker in Avengers: Infinity War. A version of Mjolnir from the past also came into play in Avengers: Endgame, but the story of the original one that Jane wields is sure to have a story of its own revealed in Love and Thunder.

The film also marks a dramatic return for Jane herself, who first entered the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2011’s Thor as an astrophysicist and Thor’s love interest. Portman reprised the role for the 2013 sequel Thor: The Dark World, but after a long absence from the MCU, Jane is now returning with superpowers of her own and the godly title that once belonged to Thor. Portman related her children’s reaction to her new upgraded performance, noting that they called it “The best thing ever!”

Along with Portman’s ascension, the upcoming movie promises to introduce a new pantheon of classic Greek gods, led by Russell Crowe as Zeus. They and Asgard’s gods alike are threatened by Gorr the God Butcher, who will be played by Christian Bale in his MCU debut. Director Taika Waititi claims that Bale’s Gorr is “the most sympathetic villain [Marvel has] had,” and that he “tested the highest out of any villain that Marvel’s had.”

Fortunately, Thor and Jane will have other allies backing them up, including the Guardians of the Galaxy and Waititi’s own character, the rock monster Korg. Thor: Love and Thunder storms into theaters on July 8.
