Pro comic book artist Skylar Patridge shares an illustration of Lady Winter Soldier, her gender-swapped take on Captain America’s ally Bucky Barnes.
Spectacular Marvel fan art just surfaced online that reimagines Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier as Becky Barnes.
Pro comic book artist Skylar Patridge, who has previously worked for Marvel, shared the illustration on Twitter. Titled “Lady Winter Soldier,” it portrays a gender-swapped version of Bucky wielding two pistols, with a red Hydra logo behind her. As envisioned by Patridge, Becky Barnes sports an identical costume to her male counterpart, from her black eye paint to her cybernetic right arm. The character’s hairstyle is also clearly modeled on Stan’s mop in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, with her unkempt bob mirroring the actor’s shoulder-length locks in that film.
As impressive as Patridge’s Lady Winter Soldier design is, its status as an unofficial creation means it’s unlikely to show up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe any time soon. Stan’s own MCU future is only marginally more certain, as the actor has previously revealed he’s unsure whether he’ll be invited back to play Bucky Barnes again. “I haven’t known [if I’m needed for future MCU projects] for 10 plus years, I always am very happy when I get to live another day, hopefully before I get too old. We’ll see, anything is possible,” he said.
The star, who last played the role in the animated Disney+ series What If…?, added that he’s happy to continue portraying The Winter Soldier for as long as Marvel Studios will let him. “It’s not up to me. I don’t make these decisions,” he said. “As long as they’ll keep calling, I’m there. I don’t know. I get old, too. Like everyone in the world, I AGE! So I don’t know what that means. Maybe it doesn’t mean anything! I have no idea. I’m just going for the ride.”
Despite Stan’s willingness to return, he previously admitted that taking part in Marvel Studios productions can be a challenging experience. The Romanian-born American actor singled out 2019’s Avengers: Endgame as an especially difficult shoot because, like most of the film’s cast, he wasn’t allowed to read the full script. Stan added that while he trusted directors Anthony and Joe Russo, not being able to fully understand his scenes was at odds with his usual approach to acting.
More recently, Stan responded to a recurring question regarding whether Bucky Barnes “got justice” over the course of his MCU appearances to date. “He had plenty of moments and we got him to a good place, so that’s what I’m happy about,” he replied.
