Disney movies typically have well-loved protagonists who carry their stories, whether they’re princesses, princes, or even animals. However, sometimes the side characters, villains, or love interests are just as exciting and leave fans wanting more.
Sometimes a character’s background is most intriguing, as the events of their past shape them into who they are and influence their motivations. On the other hand, some stories are just getting started, and it would be fascinating to see where the characters go in spin-off sequels.
10 Flynn Rider Grows Up A Thief (Tangled)
Flynn Rider, or Eugene Fitzherbert, is the thief who sweeps Rapunzel off her feet and helps her leave her tower to explore the real world. As one of the most likable Disney princes, many Tangled fans would love to see more of Flynn, especially his humble beginnings.
As an orphan, Eugene grows up reading stories to other kids. Then, to make a better life for himself, he becomes a thief, always on the run from the police before his final grab, Rapunzel’s crown. It would be fascinating to see a movie starring young Flynn and his adventures before meeting his princess.
9 Zazu Serves The Royal Family For Decades (The Lion King)
Zazu is a red-billed hornbill and the royal assistant to Mufasa and Simba. He’s hilarious, up-tight, and sassy – his story could go multiple ways. He could have a prequel movie, showing his childhood and how he matured into the bird he is in The Lion King, possibly growing up alongside Mufasa.
However, he could also have a sequel after The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride, assisting as Kiara takes over from Simba and becomes the queen of the Pridelands. With a character as versatile and unlucky as Zazu, he could surely get into sticky situations at any age that would leave fans laughing.
8 Jafar’s Past Descends Him To Evil (Aladdin)
Jafar is the villain in Aladdin. He’s the advisor to the Sultan, who’s secretly evil and plotting to take over the throne. His greedy, power-hungry personality originated somewhere, and it would be interesting to see his life before he finds his diamond in the rough.
He could’ve had a tough childhood, or was truly a trusted and good advisor until one event shifted his perspective. Many fans would like to learn more about the villain’s past and how he became corrupt. A prequel film could also humanize him, gaining him sympathy if he’s deserving.
7 The Madrigal Triplets Discover Their Powers At Such A Young Age (Encanto)
The Madrigal triplets from Encanto, Julieta, Pepa, and Bruno, gain their powers at five years old, the first generation in the Madrigal family that Casita blesses. Julieta’s cooking can heal any injury, Pepa can control the weather, and Bruno can see the future.
It would be riveting to see a film about the triplets as kids and how Abuela discovers their powers. The children coping with their abilities, struggling to control them, and learning and growing would make an incredible coming-of-age story about characters fans already know and love.
6 Frozone’s Powers Warrant A Spin-Off Hero Story (The Incredibles)
Frozone, or Lucius Best, is Mr. Incredible’s best friend and partner in (stopping) crime. He has the power to accumulate moisture and turn it into ice. He’s hilarious and relatable, and he and his wife quickly became fan favorites in The Incredibles.
Many fans would love to see a spin-off superhero story starring Frozone and his family, assuming his children have powers like the Parrs. A second superfamily, full of different abilities and hilariously rambunctious kids to drive Honey up the wall, would make for a fantastic film.
5 Mushu Fails As A Guardian And Is Demoted (Mulan)
Mushu is the feisty and ambitious dragon who serves as a guardian spirit for the Fa family. However, before sneaking off to prove himself and his worth via Mulan, the other guardians mention that they demoted him for failing an ancestor, which resulted in his death.
Mushu’s fall from grace would explain his overly-eager-to-please mindset and the events leading up to his time with Mulan. His past as a guardian would undoubtedly make for a funny and slightly tragic tale that would provide insight into how the dragon became who he is.
4 King Triton’s Loss Results In Human Hatred (The Little Mermaid)
King Triton, the king of the sea and Ariel’s father, displays a severe hatred for humans throughout The Little Mermaid. He forbids his curious young daughter from going near the surface, lest a human spot her, and is utterly outraged when she falls in love with Prince Eric.
Years prior, humans killed Ariel’s mother, Athena, which fuels Triton’s fear and hatred. Their backstory, explaining their relationship and her ultimate demise, would give fans a deeper understanding of his somewhat overbearing parenting style and why he distrusts life above the sea so much.
3 Sisu Experiences Kumandra At Its Best (Raya And The Last Dragon)
Sisu is the energetic, vibrant, and self-deprecating “last dragon” of Kumandra who helps Raya save their world from the Druun and bring life back. Before the first invasion of the evil plague spirits, dragons roamed the earth and sacrificed themselves to create the Dragon Gem, saving all the humans.
These events took place hundreds of years before Raya was born, so viewers only get a glimpse at life in Kumandra when it was its most grand. It would be fascinating to see a film starring Sisu and depicting a world full of dragons, magic, and harmony up until the invasion of the Druun.
2 Boo’s Future Is Unknown (Monsters Inc.)
Boo is the adorable, pony-tailed little girl who steals Mike and Sully’s hearts in Monsters Inc. when she follows them into their world. At the film’s end, Boo returns to her room, left with a loving bond with the two monsters.
Many fans wonder what happens to Boo and how her time in Monstropolis affects her as she grows up. Boo’s future is unknown, and although fans have theories about who she grows up to be (including Abby from Turning Red and Violet from The Incredibles), it would be great to get answers about the little girl who changed monsters’ lives.
1 Meg Faces Betrayal And Heartbreak (Hercules)
Megara, or Meg, is Hercules’s love interest and Hades’s prisoner, who is used as bait to trap the young hero. Meg and Hades refer to her life before she sold her soul, detailing that a past partner betrayed her and broke her heart after she gave her life to save his.
Meg’s story leaves much to the imagination, and her path to Hades would make for a compelling tale. She’s spunky, feisty, not afraid to speak her mind. She’s overall one of the best Disney characters, especially for young girls. Her past is mysterious and intriguing enough to warrant a spin-off leading up to the popular movie.
