One of the most challenging aspects of making superhero movies is stringing together a cohesive plot, especially with so many moving parts. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has made errors in the past due to this reason. And with Thor: Love and Thunder having a big cast, lots of continuity to keep in check, and a few intersecting threads with Gorr’s crusade, Jane’s cancer and the Odinson’s quest to heal, it’s no surprise the studio ran into the same problem again. With that in mind, let’s dive into the biggest plot holes and unanswered questions.
How Did Thor Have Blue Eyes Again?
In Avengers: Infinity War, Rocket Racoon gave Thor a replacement eye after he lost one in Ragnarok. It was a brown eye, but strangely enough, Thor had two blue ones in Love and Thunder. Fans thought this was an error in the trailer, but it could be Rocket got a blue one during their adventures after Endgame.
Where’s Gamora After Endgame?
Thor and the Guardians ran peacekeeping missions, but Star-Lord’s team left to answer distress calls due to Gorr’s chaotic mission of killing gods. However, Star-Lord never mentioned Gamora, even when he spoke to Thor about rebounding after losing a lover. It’d have been nice to know what this time-displaced assassin was up to, which could have been what pulled the Guardians away.
How Did Zeus Know Gorr’s Destination?
When Thor tried to recruit gods at Omnipotence City, Zeus said they should hide out with him, as Gorr wasn’t coming there. Zeus confessed Gorr was instead trying to find Eternity’s temple, but the film never explained how Zeus knew that, especially as it didn’t seem he met any folks who survived the God Butcher and could spill the news. It’s also a mystery how Gorr actually found out about Eternity and the wish there he could use to erase all gods.
How Did Thor and Jane Get to Eternity?
Gorr kidnapped Asgardian kids, so he could get Stormbreaker and use the key to find the temple: the Bifrost. However, Thor used the Lightning Bolt he stole from Zeus to jump to the temple in the finale, while Jane used Valkyrie’s horse, Pegasus, to go as The Mighty Thor. This was a head-scratcher because Love and Thunder never said these were other workable keys to get to this supposedly hidden space.
Why Didn’t Thor Take Mjolnir?
The only weapon Thor had was the Lightning Bolt after Gorr stole his ax, but seeing as Mjolnir was still responsive, it’s weird he didn’t wield it when he went to the temple. He needed extra power, plus this would have taken the hammer away to ensure Jane wouldn’t transform and die. The fact Thor left it with her was silly as she would clearly have changed form, left her deathbed and come help.
What’s the Necrosword’s Origin and Powers?
The Necrosword called to Gorr, ergo why he took it and killed his malicious god, Rapu. However, Love and Thunder never explains the sword’s origin, the voice inside, what corrupted Gorr and its powers. It’s also blank how it allowed Gorr to sense Jane’s cancer and see Valkyrie losing her loved ones. In addition, it wanted to regenerate before Jane destroyed it, plus it magically appeared in Gorr’s hand in the beginning to slay Rapu. Rapu wasn’t even alerted to its presence, so there’s a lot of mystery surrounding the blade’s will and sentience.
When Does Thor Opt for Collaboration?
In the finale, Thor shared his lightning powers with the kidnapped kids. They fought off Gorr’s shadow monsters, but no one knows how Thor developed this Shazam-like talent and why he didn’t share power with the Guardians, Avengers or even with Sif. In addition, the film never reveals why he didn’t call on any of them to go to Eternity when Valkyrie and Jane got damaged.
What Was Jane’s Catchphrase?
Jane struggled to come up with a war cry, eventually using “Eat my hammer!” when she fought Gorr. Thankfully, she convinced Gorr to end his mission, but just before Jane died, she whispered the phrase she settled on into Thor’s ear. He called it perfect but never divulged it, so it may be kept secret for the sequel.
What Happened to Korg’s Mother?
Ragnarok had Korg speaking of his mother in a therapeutical scene, but in Love and Thunder, he mentioned he had two dads. It gave the movie an inclusive feel while fitting the comics where Kronans were all male. Still, it’d have been nice to know if it was a retcon, especially as Korg entered into a queer relationship with fellow Kronan, Dwayne, reaffirming no females existed in the species.
When Did Heimdall Have a Son?
Director Taika Waititi admitted Love and Thunder was around four years or so after Endgame, so Axl (Heimdall’s son) should have been around in the earlier films. Yet, whether it’s the Thor solo flicks or the Avengers movies, there’s no mention of him having a boy. It seems Axl was put in just to keep Thor in contact with the kidnapped kids.
When Was the Jane Statue Erected?
When the kids were teleported back to New Asgard, a giant Mighty Thor statue was already up. However, Jane had only just died. It could be that Jane’s tribute was done in the months when she wielded the hammer. But if that’s the case, it’s odd to pay homage with his monument to a hero after such a short stint on the job.
Why Didn’t Anyone Use the Eternity Well Before?
Seeing as Thor, Valkyrie and most upper-echelon cosmic beings in the MCU know about Eternity’s wishing well, one had to wonder why Thanos didn’t seek it out. It’d have been easier than hunting the Infinity Stones. Additionally, the Asgardians could have sought it out to undo the Snap in Endgame rather than risk the fabric of reality in a time-heist.
Why Didn’t Gorr Make a Better Wish?
A repentant Gorr wished Love (his child) back to life and then died. But he could have wished for her and him to live happily together. In fact, he could have wished for everyone he met in life — his people, family, Jane and his victims — to have a long healthy life. It felt dramatic, acting as a plot device to let Thor adopt Love. This also opened up another mystery because Love had laser eyes, which meant Gorr might have inadvertently wished her into becoming a weapon.
Who Else Is in Valhalla?
When Jane died, she met Heimdall in Valhalla. The rule is that one has to fall in battle, so Frigga, the Warriors Three and even Infinity War‘s Loki should be there in the divine halls. Odin died a peaceful death, though, so it’s open to interpretation if he’s present or if villains gain entry, too, such as Hela and any other evil yet brave souls Thor put down in the field.
How Did Zeus and Valkyrie Survive?
Love and Thunder was filled with death fake-outs, but at least Korg’s revival was detailed — once his face is intact, he’ll regrow like Groot. But Valkyrie got impaled by Gorr’s sword straight through the chest, while Thor shot Zeus’ bolt right through his heart. These were deadly blows from WMDs, so it’s peculiar the film never explains how they survived.
