Skybound Entertainment released a trailer for the upcoming tie-in game The Walking Dead: Betrayal.
The company announced the title with an official trailer depicting survivors communicating about a need for supplies and reacting to hordes of zombies and attacks by other players while revealing the game’s isometric perspective and multiplayer mechanics. The game will reportedly be a cooperative third-person action game set in post-apocalyptic Canada in which a team of players must survive and escape hordes of zombies while a few players selected as “traitors” attempt to sabotage and defeat them.
From developers Other Ocean Interactive, known for the hidden-role survival game Project Winter, TWD: Betrayal utilizes “social deception” gameplay combined with zombie survival and combat tactics across teams of up to eight players. The game will pit teams of eight players against hordes of zombies and themselves as they fight not only the living dead, but each other by not only sabotaging repairs and causing the demise of other players, but also making accusations and potentially tearing the team apart from inside.
Robert Kirkman, creator of Image Comics’ The Walking Dead and chief creative director for Skybound Entertainment, described the title as a “fresh and unique take” on social deception gameplay, calling Other Ocean Interactive “true innovators” of the genre. Other Ocean CEO Andrew Ayre shared the sentiment, stating that the company’s experience in the genre has given them the proper expertise to pair it with Skybound’s classic comic book franchise.
The game’s setting will be separate from the Walking Dead television show, which serves as an adaptation of Kirkman and artist Charlie Adlard’s original comic book storyline. Skybound has confirmed in the past that Telltale’s The Walking Dead video game series is set within the comic book’s universe, and Betrayal appears to follow suit with its art style and branding, though the developers have not stated whether any familiar characters may appear.
While the game is set for release on PC, Other Ocean and Skybound Entertainment have not provided any details on the possibility of a home console release, which may depend on the game’s initial success. For information about the game and a chance to join early access beta testing, fans can join the developers’ official Discord server.
Neither the developers nor Skybound have provided a concrete release date for the title, but they confirmed that closed beta testing will begin on August 10 for a select group of players, with an early access release coming later this year. The game will reportedly be priced at $19.99 at the time of its official launch on Steam, with procedural content updates to come in the following months.
