AMC is doubling down on The Walking Dead, with the network renewing both The Walking Dead: Dead City and The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon for second seasons.
Announced during San Diego Comic-Con 2023, the renewal comes ahead of both the Dead City Season 1 finale on July 23 and the premiere of Daryl Dixon on Sept. 10. “This next chapter in the Walking Dead Universe continues to thrive with a terrific inaugural season for Dead City and highly anticipated new journey for fan-favorite character Daryl Dixon coming in September,” said Dan McDermott, president of entertainment and AMC Studios for AMC Networks. “We can’t wait to bring Dead City fans back to the epicenter of Manhattan for more zip-lining action with Maggie and Negan. And, ahead of its debut, we’re thrilled to double down on Daryl as we bring the apocalypse to France, transforming Notre Dame, Pont du Gard and other iconic locales into an apocalyptic landscape unlike anything we’ve seen before.”
The Walking Dead: Dead City, starring Lauren Cohan and Jeffrey Dean Morgan, debuted in June as the number-one season premiere in the history of AMC+ in terms of viewership across all new and returning series, including The Walking Dead. Viewership has continued to grow on AMC and AMC+ with each successive week to date. In the six-episode first season, fan-favorite characters Maggie (Cohan) and Negan (Morgan) travel into a post-apocalyptic Manhattan, long ago cut off from the mainland to rescue Maggie’s son, Herschel.
Daryl Dixon Sends Norman Reedus to France
Like Dead City, the upcoming The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon is set after the events of The Walking Dead, picking up with Norman Reedus’ beloved character after he inexplicitly washes ashore in France, struggling to piece together how he got there and why “The series tracks his journey across a broken but resilient France as he hopes to find a way back home. As he makes the journey, though, the connections he forms along the way complicate his ultimate plan,” reads the official synopsis. Daryl Dixon will surround its title character with a new set of survivors, including Clémence Poésy’s Isabelle and Adam Nagaitis’ Quinn.
The Walking Dead Universe Isn’t Done Growing
Set to join Dead City and Daryl Dixon is the second half of Fear the Walking Dead Season 8 and the untitled Rick and Michonne spinoff series. Set to premiere in 2024, the latter series stars Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurira, both reprising their respective roles from The Walking Dead as Rick Grimes and Michonne. AMC has teased fans that the six-episode limited series will give the characters an epic love story while also promising plenty of action.
The Season 1 finale of Dead City airs on AMC on July 23, with Daryl Dixon set to premiere on Sept. 10.
