After six episodes filled with endless twists and turns, Secret Invasion has come to an exciting and explosive end. The Marvel Cinematic Universe’s latest Disney+ series finally put Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury in a starring role, giving audiences the chance to follow the super-spy on the most important mission of his life.
In its epic finale, Secret Invasion wrapped up its story while leaving viewers with several hints about what will come next. In the episode’s final moments, audiences are left with several major implications for the future of the MCU.
10 The Skrulls Are Far From Finished
Although Gravik and his rebels were wiped out at the end of Secret Invasion, they are far from the only Skrulls who had infiltrated Earth. In a previous episode, Talos indicated that at least one million Skrulls had covertly replaced humans over the last several decades. This suspicion was confirmed by his daughter, G’iah, in the season finale, where she found a bunker containing the replaced humans.
This implies that the Skrull invasion is still far from over. Apart from Gravik, there is still a large contingency of Skrulls that have replaced humans all around the world. As a result, there could be more shocking Skrull reveals beyond Secret Invasion, perhaps in an additional season or in upcoming films like The Marvels or Captain America: Brave New World.
9 A New Superhero Joins The MCU
Taking advantage of Gravik’s secret science program, Emilia Clarke’s G’iah subjected herself to an experiment that made her one of the first Super-Skrulls in the MCU. In the season finale, she also becomes subject to the Harvest, a collection of blood samples from various heroes and villains in the MCU, which makes her far more powerful than ever before.
In only one battle, G’iah has already shown herself capable of replicating the powers of Captain Marvel, Mantis, Drax, Thor, and more. With all these abilities collected into a single individual, G’iah is among the most powerful beings in the entire franchise, and will therefore play a pivotal role in the MCU’s future.
8 Sonya Falsworth Becomes Earth’s New Nick Fury
Olivia Colman dazzles in her MCU debut as Sonya Falsworth, a British intelligence agent who works alongside Nick Fury during the events of Secret Invasion. However, with Fury once again retreating to his space station after defeating Gravik, Falsworth appears to be filling in the secret agent’s shoes while he is gone.
The final episode of Secret Invasion reveals that Falsworth has continued hunting renegade Skrulls after Gravik’s defeat. In doing so, she recruits G’iah, potentially as the first of many members in the MCU’s latest superhero team, the Secret Warriors, which was heavily rumored to make its debut in Secret Invasion.
7 The Truth About The Harvest
Throughout the events of Secret Invasion, Kingsley Ben-Adir’s Skrull leader Gravik sought a mysterious item known as the Harvest. Eventually, it is revealed the Harvest contains blood samples from major heroes and villains in the MCU–including the Avengers who fought in the Battle of Earth.
While Nick Fury has always been a morally gray character, the revelation that he had collected the Avengers’ blood paints him in a very poor light. Knowing just how dangerous such an item could be, Fury allowed the Harvest to be created anyway, nearly causing the destruction of humanity as a result.
6 Rhodey Has Been Gone A Long Time
While viewers may or may not have been surprised to learn that Rhodey turned out to be a Skrull in Secret Invasion, the fact still remains that this revelation will have major ramifications on his character moving forward. Both onscreen and behind the scenes, Marvel has indicated that the real Rhodey has been gone for a long time.
It is unclear exactly how long Rhodey had been replaced by a Skrull imposter. It seems very likely that it was the Skrull Rhodey who appeared in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. However, it also remains possible that Rhodey was a Skrull as far back as Avengers: Endgame, prior to the Battle of Earth, the death of Tony Stark, and his ascension to the President’s cabinet. If this is the case, Rhodey will certainly have a lot to work through in Armor Wars, his upcoming solo movie.
5 The Kree And Skrull Peace Treaty
In the final scene of Secret Invasion‘s finale, Nick Fury travels back to the SWORD space station alongside his wife, Varra. He reveals that he is on his way to negotiate a peace treaty between the Skrulls and the Kree Empire, who have been sworn enemies for decades.
Captain Marvel revealed that the Kree Empire harbored a severe hatred for the Skrulls, resulting in the Kree-Skrull War and the destruction of the Skrull homeworld. As such, it is very surprising that the Kree would suddenly reach out in hopes of making peace. More likely, this olive branch is actually a trap perpetrated by Dar-Benn, Zawe Ashton’s Kree supervillain in The Marvels.
4 Maria Hill Is Really Gone
The first episode of Secret Invasion immediately traumatized audiences in its final moments, wherein Maria Hill was shot dead by Gravik. While viewers may have held out hope that later episodes would reveal that Hill had faked her death, Secret Invasion ends with no indication of bringing her character back.
Maria Hill was a staple of the MCU and will be dearly missed. Cobie Smulders’s character was always expected to one day take the place of Nick Fury, as her comic book counterpart did. However, with Hill gone, Fury will have to look elsewhere for his eventual replacement, perhaps settling on a seasoned colleague like Monica Rambeau.
3 Humanity Declares War On Aliens
During the events of Secret Invasion, Gravik’s terrorist Skrulls initiate an assassination attempt on President Ritson while masquerading as Russian soldiers. Although Nick Fury and Sonya Falsworth are able to convince Ritson of the truth, he responds by declaring war on all alien species–making any off-worlder an immediate enemy of the state.
Ritson’s foolhardy response to the Skrull invasion may come back to haunt him in the very near future. By declaring war on all aliens, he didn’t only make himself an enemy of the Skrulls, but every other alien race hiding out on Earth. Among these aliens are the inhabitants of New Asgard, who likely won’t respond well to Ritson’s provocative decree.
2 Earth Is On The Verge Of World War III
The MCU’s latest Disney+ series takes a dark turn in its final episode as President Ritson declares war on aliens. In their attempts to root out any Skrulls lingering on Earth, Ritson’s assassins are shown shooting down suspected imposters, including the Prime Minister of Great England, who was not a Skrull after all.
With world tensions already high after the Blip, Ritson’s assassinations haven’t made things any better. By murdering the world leaders of many allied countries, the United States immediately made itself an enemy of several global superpowers. As such, Ritson’s even more bombastic successor, Thaddeus Ross, may find himself in the midst of World War III during the events of Captain America: Brave New World.
1 Nick Fury Is Back
Secret Invasion may have had its twists and turns, but it was most importantly a character study on Nick Fury. The Disney+ series delved into Fury’s psyche after his death and resurrection in Infinity War and Endgame. No longer as strong as he once was, Fury made mistakes after the Blip. However, in the wake of Secret Invasion, the stronger version of Fury is finally back.
Now that Fury has regained his confidence, he can get back to work at keeping the world safe. As his first act, Fury will team up with Captain Marvel, Photon, and Ms. Marvel to stop the Kree Empire’s latest revolutionary, Dar-Benn, from completing her villainous mission in The Marvels.
