Ali Selim, the director of Marvel’s Secret Invasion, explains the significance of the finale’s most crucial scene.
Selim, who worked as an executive producer and directed all six episodes, told Variety the series made him think deeply about the idea of “other.” He explored how we face the idea of “other” in our lives and communities, and the challenges of unusual love and acceptance. Selim said, “Ultimately, the scene that I pushed for and really enjoyed is when Nick Fury kisses Varra at the end. That is releasing the sense of ‘other’ in himself that has been a constraint or a prejudice. It’s opening up the world to conversation, if not all out love and embracing. It’s the very last scene of the series, and it really feels like that’s what it’s about.”
For Selim, this final scene epitomizes the heart of the story. He discussed these topics with series stars Samuel L. Jackson and Kingsley Ben-Adir, who played the Skrull Gravik.
Secret Invasion Reaches Its Conclusion
The six episode Disney + series, starring Jackson as the iconic Nick Fury, ended with a 37-minute finale that raised questions for many fans. Secret Invasion began by uncovering Fury’s past with his wife Priscilla (Charlayne Woodard), who is actually Varra, a Skrull spy working with Fury and Gravik. Their relationship faced challenges when Fury disappeared in the Blip in Avengers: Infinity War, causing Varra to consider Gravik’s terrorist ideas. However, she finally returns to being a hero thanks to her partnership with G’iah, played by Emilia Clarke.
The absence of a post-credits scene in the finale raised some eyebrows, but the series holds massive implications for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, particularly the Skrulls. In the finale, Nick Fury and Varra venture into space, the Skrulls return to seclusion, and Sonya Falsworth (played by Olivia Colman) forms an alliance with G’iah. The situation with the Skrulls initially seemed dire, as many of them sided with Gravik’s terrorist mission on Earth. However, by the end of the Secret Invasion finale, Fury clearly emerges whole and ready to move forward.
Furthermore, Selim offered clarity to a long-debated question among fans, resolving the mystery surrounding Rhodey (Don Cheadle) aka War Machine’s status as a Skrull. He revealed War Machine has been a doppelganger for seven years, with the swap taking place shortly after the events of Captain America: Civil War.
Disney+ is now streaming all six episodes of Marvel’s Secret Invasion.
