My Adventures With Superman has been a comedic yet nuanced retelling of the Man of Steel’s first adventures in Metropolis. Here, Jack Quaid’s Clark Kent wants to establish himself as a reporter with the Daily Planet. But unlike past iterations, he’s only just discovering more of his powers as Superman.
Shockingly, the cunning Lois Lane has figured out Superman’s identity despite Clark still adjusting to his new role as a guardian. She quickly pieced together all the clues on his past in Smallville, how he goes missing when crimes occur, and how he lies amid all the nervous energy. In Episode 5 appropriately named “You Will Believe a Man Can Lie,” Lois finally makes a big move to call Clark out on his deception. The scene even pays tribute to one of Superman II’s most iconic sequences.
My Adventures With Superman Homages Lois’ Leap of Faith
In Superman II, Margot Kidder’s Lois is sure Clark is Superman. As such, she jumps out of a window in the bullpen at the Daily Planet, thinking he’ll fly after her and catch her. However, Christopher Reeve’s Clark uses his brain and super-speed to pad a cushioned fall on the street below. He also deploys his super-breath to slow her momentum down and not cause damage. He then races back up top to the window, yelling at Lois and telling her that her accusations were false.
My Adventures With Superman does its own take on this scene when Lois leaps off the roof of the Daily Planet. She’s seen enough evidence from fighting the new Intergang and going up against the new Ivo and Parasite. In this case, Clark swoops down and makes the save. But when he outs himself, Lois tries to cut ties. She hates how he lied to her, unlike Superman II’s Lois who’d fall even more in love with Clark when he finally admits the truth. This animated Lois is just torn, especially knowing she and Clark were so close to sparking a romance.
My Adventures With Superman’s Secret Teases Danger
It does feel like in time Lois will come to understand why Clark has to hide the truth. He doesn’t fully know his heritage and traditions. Plus, it’ll be for the greater good because he wouldn’t want to endanger people he loves. Still, the more they try to patch things up, the more Lois gets placed in the firing line. After all, it’s already been established My Adventures With Superman’s Deathstroke has no problem killing to hurt the Man of Steel. The military could similarly cause a firefight that leads to Lois getting hurt as she chases the story and attempts to mend bridges.
There’s also Jimmy Olsen, who is already a victim of the drama. Clark and Lois don’t take his calls to go Bigfoot hunting in the woods and ends up going by himself. Unfortunately, the dejected Jimmy ends up being kidnapped by a mysterious gorilla in the process. This effectively reiterates the dangerous nature of Clark’s secret as Superman. It’s enough to say that even if Clark does tell Jimmy the truth, he still has to worry about his safety. Ultimately, Season 1 of My Adventures With Superman is giving Clark a major headache. Seeing as he’s so young, it’ll be intriguing to witness how he patches things up and protects his secrets for the sake of everyone in his life.
My Adventures with Superman debuts new episodes Thursdays on Adult Swim, with episodes available to stream the following day on Max.
