Greta Gerwig was living in her own Barbie World on her birthday on Friday, courtesy of a special surprise from Barbie star Ryan Gosling.

On the official TikTok account for the Barbie movie, a video was shared revealing how a Barbie-themed flash mob surprised Gerwig on her special day. In the video, Gerwig can be seen looking both shocked and entertained to see the dancers in action. A message that was shared along with the video reads, “As Kens know… Sometimes the only way to express your feelings is through song & dance! Ken Ryan sent these special Barbies and Kens to start Greta’s birthday with all the feelings.”

Perhaps this was another way for Gosling to show his thanks to Gerwig for casting him in the role of Ken in Barbie. Gosling had been a first choice for the part, and given the praise he’s been given for his performance, it must have been the right call. In the film, Gosling is one of many Kens, in Barbieland who travels to the real world with Barbie (Margot Robbie). Gosling even recorded a special song for the film, “I’m Just Ken,” which charted at No. 87 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Barbie Will Surpass $1 Billion on Greta Gerwig’s Birthday Weekend

The box office success of Barbie has been phenomenal, and there will be a lot that Gerwig will have to celebrate heading into her birthday weekend. Barbie has surpassed $916 million and it is expected to reach the $1 billion mark over the next few days. This will also make Gerwig the first solo female director to have a movie surpass $1 billion at the global box office. The critical reception has also been very positive with most critics and filmgoers giving high praise to Barbie. Whether that leads to a sequel remains to be seen, as Gerwig recently admitted she has no ideas for Barbie 2.

“At this moment, [the first movie is] all I’ve got,” Gerwig told the New York Times. “I feel like that at the end of every movie, like I’ll never have another idea and everything I’ve ever wanted to do, I did. I wouldn’t want to squash anybody else’s dream but for me, at this moment, I’m at totally zero.”

Gerwig penned the screenplay for Barbie with Noah Baumbach. Along with Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie, the movie stars America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Michael Cera, Issa Rae, Rhea Perlman, John Cena, Dua Lipa, Simu Liu, Emma Mackey, and Will Ferrell.

Barbie is playing in movie theaters.
