How To Conquer The Water Temple In Legend Of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom

Cookbook Planner

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom brings back traditional dungeons to the Legend of Zelda franchise with its four temples, each with a series of unique puzzles to solve. Completing a temple will reward players with the powers of a Sage to use in both exploration and combat, in addition to progressing Tears of the Kingdom‘s main story, so they are better completed sooner rather than later. Tears of the Kingdom‘s Water Temple is an important dungeon that can be found by completing the “Sidon of the Zora” quest.

Upon their arrival at the Water Temple, players should head up the stairs and into the open area to speak with Sidon. During the conversation, he will point out that the source of the sludge can be washed away by the pure water of Zora’s Domain once all four faucets have been turned on by opening their valves. The player’s goal then, to complete the Water Temple, is to find a way to turn every faucet on and wash out the sludge. This unlocks a fast travel point for the Water Temple, so players can leave to get any necessary items they feel they might need for their journey through the temple. For this particular temple, it’s good to have plenty of Splash Fruit and arrows on hand.

How To Open The First Valve In The Water Temple

Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom video game two water valves open in the Water Temple

While facing the fast travel point, head left toward a small ramp that leads off the edge and drop to the floor below (Water Temple B1) to find an opening blocked with fire jets, then use Sidon’s shield ability to safely pass through the fire. Inside the small room, use Link’s Ultrahand ability to grab the Hover Stone floating in the corner to the left of the fire and move it over to the switch on the ground to the right of the fire. To depress the switch using the Hover Stone, simply strike it with any weapon to cause it to fall, deactivating the wall of fire in the process.

Move to the other side of the room now, toward the spikes, and fire an arrow at the Hover Stone floating near the ceiling in the right corner. This will send the stone and the chest attached to it plummeting to the ground. Finally, grab the Hover Stone with Ultrahand and pull it over to open the chest, and retrieve the Large Zonaite inside.

Activate the Hover Stone once more, then move it to the opposite end of the spikes toward the orb on the other side. Let go of it, then glide over the spikes to reach the orb. Attach the orb to the Hover Stone, move the stone to the other side again, then glide over the spikes to reach the other side. Position the orb and Hover Stone near the wall there, then either use Ascend on a nearby Hover Stone to reach the top of the wall.

Finally, grab the Hover Stone with the orb on it and move it to the small, circular opening on the wall near the depressed switch so that the orb fills the hole. This will unlock the gate on the other side of the room. Inside the room is a water wheel. Use Sidon’s shield ability and then swing any weapon toward the wheel to release a wave of water that will cause the wheel to spin. A brief cinematic will play, showing the first valve being opened, and Sidon will excitedly comment that there are only three to go.

How To Open The Second Valve In The Water Temple

To open the second valve in the Water Temple, begin by moving out of the room with the Hover Stones and then up the stairs. At the end of the stairs, leap across the gap onto a lily pad in the pool there, then use Ultrahand to grab a chest containing a Sapphire out of the bottom of the pool and place it on the lily pad next to Link to open it.

Use Ascend to reach the floor above, then leap across the small, floating platforms there to reach a much larger platform where a few Zonai Soldier Constructs await. After defeating the Constructs, attach a Splash Fruit to an arrow and then fire it at the edge of the nearby floating platform to create a waterfall. Swim up the waterfall to retrieve a chest containing a Zora Shield, then glide back down to a small pool holding a large orb.

Zelda: TOTK video game Link moving large orb to a bubble in the Water Temple

Move the orb over to the edge of the platform where a large sludge-covered cube is jutting out from the ground, then use a Splash Fruit or Chuchu Jelly arrow to wash the sludge off the cube. Large bubbles will form where the sludge used to be. Grab the orb and move it to one of the bubbles. The bubble will then absorb the orb, and it will float up to the next platform. These bubbles can be used to transport Link to the upper platform as well. The bubble with the orb in it will eventually pop, dropping the orb into the large pool on the upper platform.

When Link lands on the upper platform, look for a Hover Stone, grab it with Ultrahand, then attach it to the top of the open gate near the center of the platform. With the Hover Stone attached to the gate, move the gate up, and it should remain open, draining the water in the pool and revealing a round opening in its center. Drop the large orb into the opening and a nearby gate will open, revealing a water wheel inside. Once again, use Sidon’s shield ability to turn the wheel and the second valve will open.

From here, move onto the main platform in the center of the temple and defeat the enemies there. This is a perfect opportunity to pick up some Chuchu Jelly from the Blue Chuchus in the area. Once Link’s cleared out the enemies, look for a sludge-covered edge on the upper platform on the opposite side of the center platform. Shoot a Splash Fruit or Chuchu Jelly arrow at the sludge to reveal a waterfall. Swim up the waterfall to the next platform and clear the sludge on the ground to free a chest containing five arrows.

Continue moving forward across some small floating platforms to reach a large bubble with an object inside it. Use Link’s Recall ability on the object, then jump into the bubble and allow it to take him high enough to reach the next platform. Head over to the water wheel next to the waterfall, then attach the two large slabs in the pool below to the bottom and top of the water wheel. Finally, move the water wheel so that the waterfall catches it, and it will activate a nearby electrical current.

Behind the wall where the electrical current runs, there’s another bubble with an object inside it. Grab the bubble and position it so that it completes the electrical circuit and the nearby gate will open. Inside is yet another water wheel that will open the third valve when Link uses Sidon’s ability on it.

Move back to the center platform and to its edge, where a red Like Like is hanging from the platform above. Defeat the Like Like, and it will drop a chest containing a Strong Zonaite Shield. Use Ascend to reach the platform above, defeat all the enemies there, then head over to the end of the platform to find a floating Hover Stone near a large cube.

Tears of the Kingdom Link firing an arrow at a switch in the Water Temple

Move the Hover Stone so that it’s positioned directly above Link and near the rapidly spinning object on the nearby pillar. Attach a Chuchu Jelly or Splash Fruit to an arrow, jump, and arm Link’s bow to slow down time temporarily, then fire a water arrow at the sludge on the spinning object to clear it. Perform the same maneuver to hit the switch inside the object and the water below will drain, revealing the last water wheel. Before jumping off of the Hover Stone, turn around and glide over to a small platform with a chest containing a Large Zonai Charge.

Finally, one last time, use Sidon’s ability on the water wheel to open the final valve. A cinematic will show the last faucet opening and Sidon saying that it’s time to use the central device. Before heading up to the central device, however, look underneath a structure in the drained pool for a small chest containing an Opal. Now, head over to the central device and activate it to start the boss fight.

How to Defeat the Mucktorok

Mucktorok boss fight intro in Zelda: TOTK Water Temple

The Mucktorok boss fight has two phases, but they’re both fairly straightforward. The first phase begins after the brief cinematic where the Mucktorok jumps onto the back of a sludge-covered shark. The shark will burrow itself underground and attempt to run Link over. Using Sidon’s shield ability to send a wave of water at it will force it above ground, letting players squeeze in a series of attacks on the Mucktorok. Once it reaches half of its health, the boss fight will enter phase two.

During phase two, the Mucktorok will splash sludge everywhere, which will need to either be avoided or dealt with using Sidon’s ability, Chuchu Jelly, or Splash Fruit. However, focus on hitting the Mucktorok with Sidon’s ability while it’s swimming around underground. The shark will also leap out every once in a while and send a wave of sludge hurtling toward Link. On a direct hit with Sidon’s ability, the shark will launch out of the ground and expose the Mucktorok. Fuse a Keese Eye onto an arrow, then fire a shot at the Mucktorok to stun it. Attack it until it goes underground again, then repeat this process until the Mucktorok is defeated. Once players have accomplished this, they’ll have truly conquered TOTK‘s Water Temple.
