The Sentry has been dead since 2020’s King in Black crossover, but Marvel’s answer to Superman is ready to make a comeback, only this time it will be a brand-new Sentry who will be taking over in a new Sentry miniseries by writer Jason Loo and artist Luigi Zagaria, as the Sentry’s powers and memories are beginning to manifest in different people around the world – will one of them take control and become THE new Sentry? Discovering the answer to that question is the purpose of the new series, out this December.
It is worth noting that 2023 is the 30th anniversary of the Reign of Supermen, the famous storyline where four new characters debuted seemingly to take over as the new Superman, and now, 30 years later, Marvel’s version of Superman, The Sentry, is getting a similar treatment in this new miniseries.
What happened to the Sentry?
The Sentry was a man named Bob Reynolds who was a long-established part of the Marvel Universe, having a major impact on a number of notable Marvel heroes like Spider-Man, the Hulk and Mister Fantastic, but he discovered that his arch-nemesis, The Void, was actually just his own alternate personality. Therefore, to protect the world, he erased the existence of himself and the Void from the minds of everyone on Earth, including himself. Eventually, he returned and made his “debut” to the world, and became a member of the Avengers. He famously tore Carnage into pieces before joining the team.
He first died during the battle for Asgard in the crossover, Siege, when the Void took control of his body, and Thor was forced to kill him. The Sentry was resurrected by the Apocalypse Twins, at which point he eventually regained control over his body, and Doctor Strange split the Void off and contained him. Eventually, the Void was released when Loki became the Sorcerer Supreme, and the Void possessed Doctor Strange. Sentry later re-merged with the Void, and eventually found a way to co-exist. Then, during the King in Black crossover, when Sentry tried to kill Knull, the God of the Symbiotes, the same way he killed Carnage, this time it was Knull who tore Sentry into two instead!
Most recently, earlier this year, the Sentry’s corpse was used to house 100 million ghosts in an attempt to defeat Doctor Strange and Clea Strange, but they defeated the plot, and Sentry’s corpse was destroyed in the process. Now, however, the Sentry is ready for a comeback.
What does Jason Loo have to say about the new series?
Speaking via a Marvel press release, Loo explained, “This new chapter of the Sentry has an intriguing concept: on top of all the responsibilities and struggles a single person has to deal with in their everyday life, can one also handle the power of a MILLION EXPLODING SUNS?” Loo said. “It’s a fun opportunity for me to create new characters that readers can see themselves in and bestow them these earth-shaking powers.”
Sentry #1 is due out on December 6.
