The world of Netflix’s One Piece gets further fleshed out nearer to its release date, dropping the first looks at the young Straw Hat Pirates.
The teaser images released via X (formerly Twitter) showcase young Zoro (Maximilian Lee Piazza), Nami (Lily Fisher), Usopp (Kevin Saula), Sanji (Christian Convery), and Pirate-captain-to-be Luffy, played by Colton Osorio. None of the East Blue Straw Hats spent much time with their biological parents; the image of Nami with Bell-mère (Genna Galloway) hopes to be indicative of the “found family” that Showrunner Matt Owens spoke about in Oda’s Two Demands. Actors for Nojiko (Chioma Umeala) and Kuina (Audrey Cymone) have also been announced.
The backstories of the Straw Hats are of major interest to fans, trimmed to fit for the live-action adaptation. Episode breakdowns indicate the show’s changes while images of Garp confirm a much earlier appearance than expected. While Oda assures fans that there are no compromises, there will be translations. Some of Sanji’s most formative movements from his childhood happen beyond season 1, but an excerpt from his actor Taz Skylar outlines in detail how the show handles Sanji’s “love for women.”
“As in, the background that he has with women in terms of the relationship he had with his mother, the relationship he had with his sister, the way that they interacted with him as opposed to the way that his brothers and his father used to interact with him. That to me, speaks volumes about why he may have a certain relationship with women in general and how we may react to it,” Skylar reveals.
The Straw Hat crew’s childhoods and backstories form a crucial part of the manga’s canon, and the live-action promises to go even further than the main story by adapting The Diary of Koby-Meppo cover stories. Fans have continued to note small details and lore from the teasers, including the Game of Thrones-esque blunder from the trailer. Reactions to the young cast have been overwhelmingly positive.
Netflix’s One Piece sets sail on August 31, 2023, with many fans marking it as a day to relive their own childhoods.
