DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn hinted that Guardians of the Galaxy stars Chris Pratt and Pom Klementieff may be in the running to join his rebooted DC Universe.
Responding to questions on his personal Threads account, per Variety, the filmmaker answered a user who suggested that the aforementioned performers should star in the franchise as themselves. “There are reasons I wouldn’t want either of those actors to play themselves in the DCU!” Gunn responded. Many have taken this to mean the director and writer has either cast or is considering casting Pratt and Klementieff as fictional characters but this remains pure speculation. Gunn has yet to follow up on this statement with any more detail.
Klementieff has previously confirmed that she’s met with Gunn about joining his cinematic superhero universe have refused to share any insight into who she could be playing. “I’m not gonna tell you guys, but we’ve had conversations and we’re making plans already. But nothing is confirmed yet,” the actor said. “There would be one specific character but I can’t tell you that,” the actor continued. “I knew about the character, and I thought the character was f—king cool.” It’s worth noting that Klementieff has technically already appeared in the DCU as a brief cameo in The Suicide Squad wherein she played a dancer in a seedy nightclub visited by the titular team.
As for Pratt, fans have already debated which character he should play. Should the Guardians of the Galaxy star join the DCU, many have suggested he take on the role of Booster Gold, a cocky, corporate-sponsored superhero from the future. It’s currently unknown if Pratt is aware of the fan casting or how he feels about the fan-favorite hero.
Gunn is currently hard at work rebooting the beleaguered DCU which has struggled along in 2023 with commercial and critical failures in the form of Shazam! Fury of the Gods and The Flash. While Blue Beetle has proven to be a hit amongst reviewers, the movie’s global box office intake has left much to be desired. Despite this, several projects are in development that will establish a new story and route for the cinematic universe. Creature Commandos is set to start the process and will be followed by Gunn’s Superman: Legacy, both of which proceed the likes of Batman: The Brave and The Bold, Waller, Booster Gold and Swamp Thing, amongst several other stories that will flesh out Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters.
