The Last of Us showrunner Craig Mazin says the video game-based series could lead to potential spinoffs that delve deeper into the show’s post-apocalyptic world.
While there haven’t been specific conversations about spinoffs with series creator Neil Druckmann, Mazin told The Wrap that he’s open to the possibility. “We haven’t talked about [spinoffs] specifically because we’re so focused on just telling this main narrative,” he explained. “I’m not against the idea of other shows that may draw from these characters or that world. I don’t know how much more The Last of Us I personally would be able to do. I mean, these shows are so big, I’m sort of burning one of the precious few remaining decades I have on telling this story.”
“But in principle, I have no issue with it whatsoever. And I’m sure Neil would be interested as well,” Mazin continued. “If there was something that made sense, then I don’t see why not. My great hope is that if there is anything like that, that it’s done with as much care and respect and love as what we are applying to this series right now.”
Future Seasons of The Last of Us
Although there are currently no confirmed spinoffs for The Last of Us, the story will continue for a while. The series was officially renewed for a second season in January 2023, with previously Mazin hinting at extending the series to four seasons or more. “You never know. It can end up being three or five. But four seems like a good number,” the showrunner said.
“Some seasons, because of the story we’re telling, will need fewer episodes, and some will need more. The best news is the audience wants more,” Mazin continued. “We will not indulge a desire for more simply to make them happier when they hear how many episodes are announced. And if they don’t like how many episodes are in a season because they want more, well, okay.”
The Last of Us Season 1 premiered on January 15, 2023, and received acclaim from fans and critics. Like the Naughty Dog video game, the series follows the story of Joel, a hardened survivor, who is hired to smuggle Ellie, a 14-year-old girl, out of an oppressive post-apocalyptic world. The debut episode was watched by 4.7 million viewers on the first day, making it the second-biggest premiere for HBO since 2010.
The Last of Us Season 1 is available to stream on Max. Season 2 does not yet have a release date.
