Director Dan Trachtenberg explains that he’s been holding onto the idea of Prey since he was a child and heard a group of older children incorrectly summarizing Predator.
Speaking to The Warp, the filmmaker explained that while he wasn’t allowed to watch the original movie in the franchise when he was younger, he heard all kinds of stories about the movie. “I was in third grade, I think, and I was in the back of a carpool on the way to a karate tournament and all the sixth graders had seen Predator and described the entire movie to me on the way to the tournament,” Trachtenberg explained. “I distinctly remember them saying, ‘There’s an awesome scene where Billy, the Native American tracker, stops on a bridge over a waterfall and cuts himself and fights the Predator.'”
Trachtenberg elaborated that when he eventually did get around to watching Predator, he was disappointed to see that the scene didn’t play out quite like he imagined. “That scene is not in the movie. You see Billy cut himself and then he screams off-camera and that’s it, but my kid brain envisioned how it must have been. So that was the first seed planted of what eventually became Prey,” the filmmaker explained.
Prey Becomes a Reality
Prey follows a young Comanche warrior by the name of Naru who is drawn into battling a dangerous intergalactic foe who arrives on Earth seeking to challenge and defeat the planet’s most dangerous fighter. Released on Hulu, the film proved to be a massive success, earning almost universal praise from fans and critics alike for its dynamic action and strong cinematography. The film was so well-received that talk of a sequel began almost immediately after its release with Trachtenberg stating that he already had some ideas of how to further Naru’s saga.
“I would like to be involved [in a Prey sequel], and I think there’s several really cool things to do next… [it] would be interesting to embark on a few different things,” the director said. While a sequel has yet to be officially announced, Trachtenberg has confirmed that he’s had meetings about doing another movie. “I can’t really say anything about that right now, but I’ll say while we were finishing the movie, we were having really exciting conversations,” Trachtenberg said. “The studio, myself, the writer, and the producers about what crazy things could we do next. And I’ve never stopped, no one stopped thinking about how cool things could be going forward.”
Prey is available to stream on Hulu.
