‘It Was Meant to Be Three Movies’

Cookbook Planner

Ron Perlman has reignited fans’ hopes for Hellboy 3 with some new comments about potentially making the long-awaited film.

Nearly two full decades ago, Perlman first appeared as the titular character in 2004’s Hellboy. Directed by Guillermo del Toro, the film was given a sequel, Hellboy II: The Golden Army, in 2008. For years, Perlman and del Toro had intended to make a third installment of the Hellboy series to cap off the trilogy, but the project never materialized. Now, about four years after the ill-fated reboot starring David Harbour, Perlman told the Geek House Show that he’s still up for doing a third Hellboy.

“If we were to make the third movie of the trilogy, I would love to do that, yeah,” Perlman said, noting how it would have to be a continuation of his prior two films rather than another reboot. “It was meant to be three movies, so… I would go back and do it, if we could finish the trilogy. But those are the only circumstances.”

Ron Perlman Says the Fans Are Owed Hellboy 3

Perlman has previously said how he’s remaining open to doing Hellboy 3, but has similarly insisted that he only wants it to happen if Guillermo del Toro is back in the director’s chair to finish the story. In any case, time may be running out on making Hellboy 3 if the movie is ever going to happen. Early last year, the actor admitted to The Independent that he wasn’t “eager,” at least physically, do do the movie, given his age, but with that said, he still wanted to make it happen for the fans.

“Am I eager to do Hellboy 3? No, I’m 71 f***ing years old,” Perlman, now 73, said at the time. “We owe this to the fans and we should give it to them because it would be an epic conclusion. So Guillermo, if you’re reading, I’m not done pounding you to get this f**king thing done.”

It’s unclear if the third installment will ever happen, but the previous films will always be around. The original Hellboy movie starring Perlman is currently streaming on both Max and Hulu, while the sequel, Hellboy II: The Golden Army, is currently on Peacock. Meanwhile, the 2019 reboot can be found streaming for free on both Amazon Freevee and Pluto TV.
