The anime Given‘s official website has announced an update for the upcoming sequel.
Based on Natsuki Kizu’s beloved Boys’ Love manga series, the upcoming anime film, announced earlier this year, will be split into two parts. The official website provided the update alongside a recap video of the series.
The Given manga’s television anime adaptation first debuted in Fuji TV’s Noitamina programming block in July 2019, marking a groundbreaking moment as the first anime in the Boys’ Love manga to join the Noitamina lineup. Crunchyroll, the popular streaming platform, started streaming the series and later treated fans to an English dubbed version in August 2022. Aniplex has also released the series on DVD and Blu-ray.
The synopsis at Crunchyroll reads: “Somehow, the guitar that he used to love to play and the basketball games that he found so fun just lost their appeal… That was until Ritsuka Uenoyama randomly met Mafuyu Sato. Ritsuka had started losing his passion for music in his everyday life, but then he hears Mafuyu sing for the first time. The song resonates with his heart and the distance between them starts to change.”
The manga’s first film adaptation served as the direct continuation of the anime series and adapted the second arc of the story, focusing on the relationship between Haruki and Akihiko. The cast and crew from the series returned for the film, and after several delays caused by COVID-19, it finally premiered in Japan in May 2020 and is available for streaming on Crunchyroll. Furthermore, fans were treated to an original anime titled Given: Uragawa no Sonza (Given – on the other hand), which revolved around Mafuyu and Ritsuka’s relationship during the events of the film. This special episode coincided with the manga’s seventh volume in December 2021 and is also available on Crunchyroll.
Published in Shinshokan’s Cheri+ magazine, the manga consists of eight volumes, with the latest book being released in October 2022. Following the conclusion of the anime series in 2019, three additional volumes have been released providing the basis for potential future ventures. In the United States, Viz Media’s SuBLime publishing division holds the license for the English version of the series.
Given is available to stream on Crunchyroll.
