As the DC Animated Universe gears up for what could be its biggest story yet, the narrative will seemingly be too large to contain in just a single movie.
Per the resume of animation director Mike Milo, which found its way to Reddit, the upcoming Crisis on Infinite Earths film will be split into three parts. It’s currently unknown whether these chapters will premiere at the same time or be spaced out for individual premieres. Some fans have acknowledged that the scale of the narrative may necessitate a three-part movie with some even speculating that it could bring together every previous DCAU release. At the time of writing, Warner Bros. Discovery has yet to confirm whether the information featured in Milo’s CV is accurate.
Announced at San Diego Comic-Con 2023, the animated version of Crisis on Infinite Earths is expected to premiere in 2024 and will have no ties to James Gunn’s currently in-development reboot of the DC Universe. Specific information on the adaptation is still scarce but Warner Bros. Discovery and DC Studios will likely reveal more as the project’s release date draws closer.
A Major Crisis
Widely regarded as one of the best and most important events in comic book history, Crisis on Infinite Earths was written by Marv Wolfman and penciled by George Pérez. Hitting shelves in 1985 and running for 12 issues, the story largely chronicles how the DC multiverse is destroyed by the might of the Anti-Monitor. In an effort to save reality, the remaining superheroes banded together to create a new world, defeating the villain in the process. Beyond marking a new start for the fictional universe’s continuity, an idea Wolfman wanted to implement to simplify the over-arching narrative, Crisis also killed off several high-profile heroes including Barry Allen aka the Flash and Kara Zor-El aka Supergirl.
Crisis on Infinite Earths proved so successful in its original run that the story has been adapted on multiple occasions. While the upcoming animated movie will be the first time the event has been turned into a film, The CW’s Arrowverse adapted many aspects of it 2019 as the narrative spanned across multiple shows including Supergirl, Arrow, The Flash, Batwoman and Legends of Tomorrow.
While a solid release date has yet to be provided for Crisis on Infinite Earths, fans can expect the alleged first part to arrive in 2024.
