Worlds Beyond Number, a TTRPG podcast from Dimension 20 & Critical Role alumni Brennan Lee Mulligan, Erika Ishii, Lou Wilson and Aabria Iyengar, celebrates the close of their Dungeons & Dragons campaign The Wizard, the Witch, and the Wild One‘s first chapter with a Hayao Miyazaki-inspired animated trailer.
Consummate Dungeon Master Mulligan cited Miyazaki’s distinct visual sensibility and flair as a major influence behind the world building of The Wizard, the Witch, and the Wild One‘s Umora. The short trailer, brought to life by artists Mimi Chiu, Jack Anderson, Arthur Neves, and Li Cree, adorably captures the friendship between Iyengar’s Suvi, Ishii’s Ame, and Wilson’s Eursulon. Far from the relatively carefree days of their Children’s Campaign under the watchful eye of Grandmother Wren, The Wizard, the Witch, and the Wild One‘s first chapter sees the three magic protagonists embark on a curse-breaking journey to Port Talon chock-full of heavy decisions and interpersonal turmoil.
Worlds Beyond Number debuted to tremendous popularity thanks to its talented role player’s built-in Dimension 20 and Critical Role fanbases. However, unlike the TTRPG artists’ previous work, The Wizard, the Witch and the Wild One‘s audio-only podcast format is brought to life with an immersive soundscape from the team at Fortunate Horse. Suvi, Ame and Eursulon wrapped their first god-tier adventure on Aug. 31, and the trio will be returning for their next chapter in October.
The animated celebration of Chapter 1 arrived fresh off the heels of an Instagram live where Mulligan, Ishii, Iyengar, and Wilson outlined the programming schedule meant to tide fans over between The Wizard, the Witch and the Wild One‘s hiatus. Between the show’s Patreon and public feed, listeners can expect releases of the short and more comical adventures of A County Affair and Cram Daniels as well as more Fireside Chats. Mulligan half-joked that he planned on running The Wizard, the Witch and the Wild One for at least 400 sessions, but the crew at Worlds Beyond Number have already proven that they have a coterie of fascinating stories to tell beyond Umora.
The details on the original Dungeons & Dragons Witch class, designed for Ishii’s Ame, will likewise become available to Worlds Beyond Number fans starting in October. Mulligan pointed out that Ishii’s role as the Witch of Toma in The Wizard, the Witch, and the Wild One classifies the homebrewed class’ one and only official play test thus far. However, fans can start to raise that sample size and perhaps even play in their own The Wizard, the Witch, and the Wild One-inspired worlds in their own home games when the Witch class details drop.
The opening saga of Suvi, Ame, and Eursulon’s story is available on Worlds Beyond Number‘s public feed through Fortunate Horse or any TTRPG fan’s favorite pod-catcher, bonus content and Fireside Chats can be accessed through the show’s Patreon.
