Fox released a trailer for The Simpsons Season 35, which is set to premiere as part of the network’s “AniDom” lineup on Oct. 1.
The trailer features a rapid sequence of scenes, including a playful parody of The Beatles’ “Get Back” recording session and the return of Sideshow Bob. According to the official synopsis via CNN Entertainment, the Season 35 premiere will see Homer volunteering as a school crossing guard after feeling worthless at work. “But when his safety squad receives too much funding, the crossing guards become a force to be feared.”
Season 35 will also include stories about the rest of the Simpson family. “Marge experiences a series of nightmares about young Bart’s childhood coming to an end; Homer accidentally volunteers for a school crossing guard position; sixty years in the future, Lisa recounts the story of how Homer was scapegoated for a power outage that plunged Springfield into darkness days before Thanksgiving; and the annual chilling trilogy “Treehouse of Horror XXXIV” is back!”
The Simpsons’ Longevity and Ongoing Relevance
Fox has officially renewed The Simpsons for Season 35 and 36 in Jan., making the animated sitcom the longest-running scripted primetime series in television history. Lisa Simpson’s voice actor, Yeardley Smith, previously discussed the show’s longevity. She assured fans that there have been no discussions about ending the series. “We started recording Season 34, and it’s the last of our two season pickups.”
“We had a pickup for 33 and 34, but I feel like we would be given a pretty big heads-up for the last season because, at the very least, Disney, who bought Fox, all but Fox News and Fox Sports, part of the reason they bought it was for The Simpsons,” Smith said. “Also, if it was the last season, I think they would want to capitalize on that and make bazillions on advertising.”
Created by Matt Groening, The Simpsons centers on the lives of the titular family in the fictional town of Springfield. Known for its sharp humor, cultural references, and social commentary, the series tackles everything, from politics and religion to pop culture and everyday life. Its longevity is remarkable, having produced hundreds of episodes over multiple seasons.
Despite debuting in 1989, The Simpsons remains relevant. The show has become synonymous with predicting the future, with events like the recent Russian invasion of Ukraine seen in older episodes. “We’re still in the news. It’s still extraordinarily relevant,” Smith continued. “The shows are great. We read a script yesterday that is fantastic. It was so funny. It’s been a joy in every way. I really mean that.”
Episodes of The Simpsons are streaming on Disney+ and Hulu, while Season 35 premieres Oct. 1 on Fox.
