John Candy Easter Egg Spotted in Newest Deadpool & Wolverine Trailer

Cookbook Planner

Ryan Reynolds is honoring legendary funnyman John Candy in the newest teaser trailer for Deadpool & Wolverine. Ahead of a longer trailer’s release on Monday, a teaser with limited footage dropped on Sunday, and it included the return of a recurring nod to Candy featured in the previous Deadpool films.

In the teaser, Reynolds’ Wade Wilson can be seen reading The Canadian Mounted. It’s the same book that Candy’s character reads in the beloved comedy Planes, Trains and Automobiles, and Reynolds has included the novel in the previous Deadpool films as a subtle tribute. These nods come from the great appreciation Reynolds has for Candy, which the actor has spoken out in the past.

Ryan Reynolds mentioned Back to the Future became his daughter James’ favorite film.

“Growing up, I had a real obsession, quite genuinely, with John Candy,” Reynolds said on Netflix’s My Next Guest Needs No Introduction With David Letterman. “And I still do. Steve Martin, a lot of the guys that came out of SNL. If I’m flummoxed in a scene or I can’t figure out a way in, I will just copy them. That sort of [Martin’s character] Neal Page, Planes, Trains and Automobiles, kind of aggressively unimpressed, kind of over-it character. I just love that, I can never get enough.”

The Book Was in the Previous Deadpool Films

In Deadpool 2, the same book can be very clearly seen, and Reynolds confirmed that he had the novel recreated so the cover would look like the exact same one that Candy held in Planes, Trains and Automobiles. He had the same book in the first movie, and it can be seen being held by Wade Wilson, though Reynolds said that the actual cover didn’t make the final cut of the film, so it’s harder to recognize that particular appearance.

Scrapped X-Force Film Would’ve Made Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool the Villain

Kick-Ass 2 director Jeff Wadlow opens up about the role Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool would have played in his scrapped X-Force movie.

“I have that book.,” Reynolds said. “Not the exact one he’s holding but I had it remade for Deadpool. And I’m carrying it under my arm in a number of scenes. I don’t think it’s ever actually seen on camera. But it’s those little things that you try to never forget. Those people that helped grow you where you are.”

There will be many other fun surprises in store for fans with the upcoming movie. It’s expected that many major cameos will be featured, such as the popular rumor that Taylor Swift will play an X-Men character. As is evident from the John Candy reference, there’s also no telling how many Easter eggs will be hidden in the background for fans to watch out for as well.

Deadpool & Wolverine will be released in movie theaters on July 26, 2024.
