The release date for Russell Crowe’s upcoming horror movie has been announced, which will see the Oscar-winning actor in the center of another exorcism story. This comes after more than a year since he starred in Sony Pictures’ The Pope’s Exorcist, which was based on the experiences of real-life priest Father Gabriele Amorth.
Per Deadline, after acquiring the North American rights to Miramax’s The Exorcism, Vertical announced that the upcoming horror thriller has been scheduled to hit the theaters this summer on June 7, 2024. In the film, Crowe will be playing the role of troubled actor Anthony Miller, who has been cast in a horror project. The official synopsis reads, “Anthony begins to unravel while shooting a supernatural horror film. His estranged daughter wonders if he’s slipping back into his past addictions or if there’s something more sinister at play.”
INTERVIEW: Land of Bad: Ricky Whittle Talks Liam Hemsworth’s Action Chops & Working With Russell Crowe
In an exclusive interview with CBR, Ricky Whittle discusses starring in the pulsating action film Land of Bad with Liam Hemsworth and Russell Crowe.
The Exorcism hails from director Joshua John Miller, who also co-wrote the script with M.A. Fortin. This marks the creative duo’s second horror project together, after previously writing the screenplay for the 2015 horror comedy The Final Girls. Crowe will be leading an ensemble cast consisting of Sam Worthington (Avatar: The Way of Water), Ryan Simpkins (Fear Street trilogy), Chloe Bailey (Praise This), Adam Goldberg (The Equalizer) and David Hyde Pierce (Frasier). In addition, the film is also produced by Scream franchise creator Kevin Williamson, Ben Fast, and Bill Block.
What’s Next for Russell Crowe?
Besides The Exorcism, Crowe will also next be seen in Sony Pictures’ highly-anticipated Kraven the Hunter movie. He is set to portray Nikolai Kravinoff, the father of Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s titular fan-favorite Marvel villain. The Spider-Man spin-off is slated to arrive in theaters on Aug. 30, 2024. The acclaimed actor is also attached to star alongside Rami Malek and Michael Shannon in the historical drama film Nuremberg. Despite receiving mixed reviews, Crowe is expected to reprise his role in The Pope’s Exorcist sequel, which is currently in development at Sony.
The Pope’s Exorcist Finally Gives Exorcism Personality
Several horror movies involve exorcism, but The Pope’s Exorcist goes a bit further by giving its villainous demon a noteworthy persona.
The veteran actor gained worldwide recognition for his breakthrough role in Ridley Scott’s 2000 epic drama Gladiator, which will be getting a sequel later this year on Nov. 22. In a previous interview, Scott shared that his original plans for the long-delayed Gladiator 2 were to revive Crowe’s Maximus from the dead, and make him travel through different historical events. Even though it has already been confirmed that Crowe won’t be returning in the Paul Mescal-led sequel, he’s still being constantly bombarded with questions about the project. “They should be fucking paying me for the amount of questions I am asked about a film I am not even in,” he said. “It has nothing to do with me. In that world, I am dead. Six feet under. But I do admit to a certain tinge of jealousy, because it reminds me of when I was younger and what it meant for me, in my life.”
The Exorcism debuts in theaters on June 7, while The Pope’s Exorcist is streaming on Netflix.
