Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 director James Gunn has shared the resolution to a long-running mystery on the film’s set: Who has been giving him Rick and Morty merchandise every day?
While filming for the Marvel Cinematic Universe movie, Gunn frequently posted on social media with photos of toys appearing on his director’s chair, with no sign of who had put them there. Finally, he tweeted to say, “The #RickandMorty figure culprits have come forward; it was, as many have guessed, a group activity with our senior VFX wrangler Ron Underdahl, who started it all, video assist Porkchop, who made operations flow smoothly, & our VFX supervisor Stef, who financed the operation.” He also shared photos of the complete set and of himself with the “culprits,” adding, “Many thanks to these guys for making every morning on the set of #GotGVol3 a bit more fun with a new figure from my favorite show. They announced themselves by one by one placing four new figures on the stand.”
Gunn announced that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 had wrapped filming on Friday, May 6. The final installment of the MCU’s trilogy featuring the fan-favorite team of misfits in space, the movie is scheduled to hit theaters next year. Gunn has previously stated that this will be the end of this version of the team as well as his involvement with it, but there are also two other projects featuring the Guardians that will be coming out in advance: The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, set to be released in December on Disney+, and Thor: Love and Thunder, which premieres on July 8.
Gunn began documenting the Rick and Morty prank on Feb. 9, initially tweeting, “Yesterday Squanchy mysteriously showed up & today Mr. Meeseeks arrived on my video feed stand on #GotGVol3. Hmmmmm.” As more toys appeared, he continued to post pictures of them, along with notes about his lighthearted investigation on where they had come from. Now that the prank has come to its end, the director notes that he’ll make good use of the merchandise, saying, “For those of you asking, we are eventually going to put these up for charity with a certificate of authentication signed by me.”
Rick and Morty is an animated comedy created for Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim. The show, currently in its fifth season, has a sci-fi setting that loosely parodies movies like Back to the Future with its mad scientist character Rick and his hapless grandson sidekick, Morty.
Gunn’s own wild sci-fi adventure, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, will arrive in theaters on May 23, 2023.
