Marvel’s Black Panther #6 sees T’Challa reveal to Ororo Munroe/Storm why he decided to annual their marriage.
Black Panther #6 comes from writer John Ridley, artist Stefano Landini, color artist Matt Milla and letterer/designer VC’s Joe Sabino. In the issue, Black Panther/T’Challa is on the run from the Hatut Zeraze, a group led by his former ally Akili, after he’s been branded as a traitor to Wakanda. Surrounded by the team of advancing soldiers, T’Challa luckily gets some unexpected assistance from a former love interest, Ororo, who made the trip to Wakanda from Arakko, where she currently resides and helps govern. Using her powers, Storm quickly takes care of the Hatut Zeraze before shooting a bolt of lightning straight into T’Challa’s chest.
Quickly cauterizing and healing the wound she inflicted, Storm and T’Challa sit down to talk. The conversation quickly turns to their relationship, as Storm points out that T’Challa is “the one who annulled our marriage. Annulled it. Wiped it away like it never happened. Like we never happened.” Referencing the 2012 Avengers vs. X-Men event that saw the two pitted against one another, T’Challa replies, “After the Avengers battled the X-Men…I knew the world would always come between us. And being a king would always come before being a husband. The responsibilities I had to shoulder…what was I going to do, put those on you?”
Storm is quick to call out that’s how relationships are ideally supposed to work and asks T’Challa whether or not he felt anything when the marriage ended. “I felt…I felt happy you wouldn’t have to put up with me anymore,” he answers. He adds, “I annulled our marriage not because I didn’t love you…but because you had a different path to travel, and you could never travel it weighted with me.”
Throughout the conversation, Storm remains somewhat unconvinced of T’Challa’s reasoning. “You felt relieved you wouldn’t have to be in a relationship anymore,” she points out to him. “Relationships take work, and you were never up to the job.” She later continues, “You’re the worst kind of person, you know that? A liar…with a good heart.”
