Star-Lord actor Chris Pratt reveals that a new pair of characters introduced in Thor: Love and Thunder will appear in Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3.

A pair of Asgardian characters making their debut in Thor: Love and Thunder will return later in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s timeline, according to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 star Chris Pratt.

Pratt, who plays Peter Quill/Star-Lord in both movies, revealed in an interview at the Love and Thunder premiere that the “space goats” seen in trailers for the film are something that director Taika Waititi added to the MCU, but that Guardians Vol. 3 director James Gunn also had to incorporate them for the sake of continuity. “[Waititi] just wanted to stick James with some goats,” laughed Pratt. “James has to pick up where Taika left off, and he stuck us with some space goats.”

Asked if it was normal for MCU directors to troll each other by including unusual elements in canon films for the next team to deal with, Pratt admitted, “Typically no, but I guess Taika kind of plays by his own set of rules!”

The space goats in question are seen in the trailers towing a Viking ship through the air, and are a nod to the Norse mythology that inspired Marvel Comics’ version of Asgard and its heroes. The myths often referred to the god Thor being transported by a chariot pulled by two goats, named Tanngrisnir and Tanngnjóstr.

Thor: Love and Thunder takes place after Avengers: Endgame, which saw Chris Hemsworth’s Thor joining up with the Guardians of the Galaxy, led by Star-Lord. The team will play a part in the new film and then take center stage for the third film in their own trilogy, set to hit theaters in 2023. Gunn, who is writer and director for all three of the Guardians films, consulted with Waititi on the characters’ portrayal in Love and Thunder.

Along with the goat chariot, the fourth Thor movie promises to introduce a new pantheon of classic Greek gods, led by Russell Crowe as Zeus. They and Asgard’s gods alike are threatened by Gorr the God Butcher, who will be played by Christian Bale in his MCU debut. Waititi claims that Bale’s Gorr is “the most sympathetic villain [Marvel has] had,” and that he “tested the highest out of any villain that Marvel’s had.”

On the side of Thor and his fellow gods are not only the Guardians of the Galaxy, but Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster wielding the powers of the God of Thunder, Tessa Thompson as Asgard’s king, and Waititi’s own character, the rock monster Korg.

Thor: Love and Thunder storms into theaters on July 8.
