Stranger Things Season 4, Volume 2 is already so popular that it’s directly responsible for crashing Netflix.
Reports have emerged on Twitter that fans flocking to watch the fourth season’s remaining two episodes en masse shortly after it dropped on Jul. 1 proved too much for the streaming platform’s servers to handle. Responding to the news, star Jamie Campbell Bower, who plays the show’s new antagonist Vecna, tweeted “Y’all broke the internet! lol.”
Part of Stranger Things fans’ mad rush to watch Season 4’s final episodes, “Chapter Eight: Dear Papa” and “Chapter Nine: The Piggyback,” likely stems from the desire to avoid spoilers. This is especially the case after a Stranger Things fan account seemingly spoiled the fate of Sadie Sink’s Max Mayfield on the eve of Volume 2’s premiere date. This ultimately proved to be a false alarm, however, as the images of Sink in gruesome eye makeup were later confirmed to be behind-the-scenes photos from Netflix’s Fear Street trilogy, instead.
There’s also little risk of spoilers coming from at least one of Sink’s co-stars, after Maya Hawke revealed that she’s forgotten the details of the Stranger Things Season 4 finale. Hawke, who plays Robin Buckley, claimed she was fuzzy on the specifics of both episodes due to the show’s lengthy production cycle. “Well, the thing is, we filmed them a long time ago now. It takes a long time to put it together, and so I know that I know what happens [in Season 4, Volume 2] but I don’t remember exactly. I haven’t seen them yet and I don’t remember exactly. So, I’m so excited to see how it all wraps up,” she said.
Spoilers notwithstanding, Stranger Things co-creators Matt and Ross Duffer recently warned fans not to go into Season 4, Volume 2 expecting a happy ending. “Usually at the end of a season, we tie things up with a nice bow, before a little tease that says, ‘Hold on, something is unraveling.’ As we move into Season 5, we don’t have to do that. There won’t be a reset from where we finish this season,” Matt Duffer said.
The Duffers also defended Stranger Things Season 4’s longer episode runtimes, especially the 2-hour and 30-minute season finale. “You didn’t really want to break it after just the build-up. It wouldn’t feel like a satisfying episode. So, at a certain point we just said, ‘Well, it’s just a mega episode,'” Ross Duffer said.
