Minions: The Rise of Gru had an intriguing end for Gru’s mischief-makers, with key threads set up to continue their journey prior to Despicable Me.
In Minions: The Rise of Gru, the yellow mischief-makers and their “Mini-Boss” were lucky to evade the threat of the Vicious 6. The villains tried to kill them and destroy the world using a mystical amulet, but thankfully, Gru’s crew got help from the founder of the Vicious 6 — Wild Knuckles. They betrayed him and tried to take him out as well, but the veteran worked with Team Gru to get the villains arrested. Interestingly, as the film ended, some key threads were set up to continue young Gru’s journey prior to Despicable Me.
Minions 3 Can Focus on Team Gru Getting Stronger
Wild Knuckles got arrested for his past crimes in the finale, but he faked his death. He then took Gru on as an apprentice, with the Minions as their henchmen. A sequel can focus on Knuckles being the father Gru never had, passing on sage advice while they avoid the authorities. They already robbed the Bank of Evil so they can go on other capers and treasure hunts.
They also recruited Dr. Nefario, the engineer who built all Gru’s weapons down the line, so they could work with him on improving the arsenal. While Gru focuses on strategy with Wild Knuckles, the Minions could work closely with Nefario on tech, maybe even running side-missions to impress their bosses. Kevin, Stuart and Bob can also visit Master Chow in San Francisco to continue their kung-fu training. Otto and the others joining would be interesting as well, crafting a competitive environment that could lead to inner turmoil and jeopardized missions, making Gru question the competency of his kooky legion.
Minions 3 Can Create a New Villainous League
The Anti-Villain League placed the Vicious 6 behind bars after Gru used the amulet to turn them into rats. That creates the perfect opportunity for Scarlet and Herb Overkill (the villains from 2015’s Minions) to escape their own incarceration in England, break them out and return them to normal. They can then form a sinister alliance, maybe even recruiting new tyrants to seek revenge on Team Gru, who stole the British Crown from the Overkills and left them for the cops.
Between both factions, they’d have powerful tech, and they could seek back out the amulet to create an army of monsters. Given the Vicious 6’s obsession with magical relics, they could also hunt other trinkets to use as weapons. It’d be the perfect blend of supernatural and scientific elements, with the Overkills being the brains and the Vicious 6 being the brawn. There’d be a lot of emotional attachment in this feud because they all hate the Minions as much as they hate Gru, which would test just how solid Wild Knuckles and Nefario are as mentors.
To see how Team Gru’s future is set up, Minions: The Rise of Gru is in theaters now.
