Stranger Things star David Harbour provided a possible release window for the Netflix show’s fifth season.
“I think we’ll [shoot] next year. They’re finishing writing it this year, and they need to prep and stuff, so hopefully it’ll be this year,” Harbour said in an interview with GQ. “But I think that’s the plan. So it’d probably come out mid-2024, based on our track record.” Harbour has portrayed Jim Hopper since Stranger Things premiered on Netflix in 2016.
Harbour’s comments are in line with a recent announcement from the Duffer Brothers, the co-creators and showrunners of the popular Netflix series, who stated that work on Stranger Things’ fifth and final season would begin in 2022. “We’re going to take a little vacation in July. And then we’re going to come back,” Ross Duffer said. “I know that the writer’s room is going to start in the first week of August.” By comparison, there was a significant gap between Seasons 3 and 4, with fans of Stranger Things waiting nearly three years before the fourth season’s premiere.
Stranger Things Is For Bingeing
While the gap between seasons may be shorter leading up to Stranger Things Season 5, Netflix’s head of scripted series for the U.S. and Canada Peter Friedlander stated that the show would stick to a binge-release format. “For the fans of Stranger Things, this is how they’ve been watching that show, and I think to change that on them would be disappointing,” Friedlander said when asked if Stranger Things would switch to weekly releases for Season 5. “To not give them exactly what they’ve been expecting — which is Stranger Things is a seasonal experience, they go through that with them — I think that it would be an abrupt change for the member.”
Stranger Things aired the second part of its fourth season on Netflix, which was not only split into two volumes but boasted significantly longer episode runtimes than previous installments. According to recent reports, Stranger Things Season 4, Volume 2 was so popular that it caused Netflix’s servers to crash upon its July 1 release date, making the site temporarily unavailable.
Since the third season of Stranger Things was released in 2019, the Duffer brothers explained that the cast members growing older allowed the series to lean further into its horror elements. Moreover, as fans rushed to watch the next installment of the supernatural drama, series co-creators Matt and Ross Duffer have warned fans not to expect a happy ending. “Usually at the end of a season, we tie things up with a nice bow, before a little tease that says, ‘Hold on, something is unraveling.’ As we move into Season 5, we don’t have to do that,” said Matt Duffer. “There won’t be a reset from where we finish this season.”
Both parts of Season 4 of Stranger Things are now available to stream on Netflix. The first three seasons are currently available as well.
