Days after receiving backlash over released gameplay, The Lord of the Rings: Gollum has been delayed.
The title, which was set to launch on Sept. 1, 2022, has been delayed for “a few months” in order to improve the game. “During the past several years, the team has been working hard to share our vision of a remarkable story, set in a breathtaking world, filled with magic and wonder,” the announcement read. “We are dedicated to meeting our community’s expectations and uncovering the untold story of Gollum in a way that honors the vision of J.R.R. Tolkien. That being said, in order to deliver the best possible experience, we have decided to push the release of The Lord of the Rings: Gollum by a few months. We’ll update with an exact timing in the near future.”
A gameplay trailer released in early July resulted in enormous backlash from fans, largely criticizing the graphics and gameplay. A repeated comparison claimed Lord of the Rings: Gollum resembled a PlayStation 3 or even PlayStation 2 title, with much of the scenerey indistinct, too brightly colored or simply appearing unfinished. The largely stealth-based game shows Gollum killing orcs and traversing well-known locations within Middle-earth.
Previously, LotR: Gollum shared gameplay footage with media members, who witnessed 20 minutes of exploring two central locations in the game: Mordor and the court of Thranduil in the Mirkwood. Much like Gollum’s appearance, LotR: Gollum‘s interpretation of Mordor is distinct from Peter Jackson’s portrayal in the films, with some yellow sulfur and greenery that sets it apart. Based on reviews of this shared gameplay, Thranduil’s court features few enemies, relying more on puzzles to keep things interesting.
