Despite his excitement about returning to the role of Winston Zeddemore in Ghostbusters: Afterlife 2, Ernie Hudson did note that he would like to have taken his character in a different direction.

Per ScreenRant, the Ghostbusters veteran discussed Winston’s part in the sequel and revealed that while he loved reconnecting with some of his old castmates, he didn’t necessarily agree with the execution. “As we introduce new stories, and new characters, that’s what moves the whole thing forward, but we’re still a part of it, so it was great to see Bill Murray, and Danny Aykroyd, Annie Potts, it’s great to see them there, and really just enjoying it and enthusiastic about being there. It’s different, it’s not necessarily the direction I would go in, but I just love being part of it, and I think the fans will like this new direction, but we’ll see,” Hudson said.

At the time of writing, details on Afterlife 2 are still scarce so the nature of the original group’s return is still largely unknown. Hudson did reveal that Winston has stepped into a new role, acting as a financier to the new team of Ghostbusters. “He’s the guy who has the money to keep this thing going. So that was good, it wasn’t so much more, because we do have these new characters, we’re introducing new stories, but he has a place and purpose for being there,” the actor continued.

New and Old Ghostbusters

As mentioned above, Hudson will be joined by the likes of Murray, Aykroyd and Potts as the original cast steps back into their iconic roles for the fourth mainline entry in the Ghostbusters franchise. Ghostbusters: Afterlife, which was released in 2021 and served as both a reboot and sequel to 1989’s Ghostbusters II, introduced a new core team of paranormal investigators in the form of Finn Wolfhard, McKenna Grace, Paul Rudd and Carrie Coon, all of whom will return for the sequel.

As for the narrative, Sony has yet to reveal specifics about the story but producer Jason Reitman confirmed that Afterlife 2 will take the new Ghostbusters back to the franchise’s roots of New York City. Given the film’s working title of “Firehouse,” many fans believe the iconic base from the original films will make a grand return but this is pure speculation at the time of writing.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife 2 is slated to haunt cinemas on Dec. 20, 2023.
