It’s definitely a great time to be a sci-fi fan, especially in the age of streamers. With Netflix leaning into shows like Black Mirror or Zack Snyder’s upcoming movie, Rebel Moon the sci-fi genre is taking off. In the case of Apple TV+, there’s been a few dystopian series about humanity in post-apocalyptic worlds via shows like Silo and See.
Coincidentally, Apple TV+ has another epic returning in the form of Foundation. Based on Isaac Asimov’s acclaimed book, showrunner David S. Goyer reveals his take on a futuristic society gearing up for an uprising against an oppressive Empire. With Season 2 looming and the rebellion in full swing, let’s dissect what lays in store as Brother Day tries to crush the anarchists in his pocket on the cosmos.
Foundation Season 2 Teases the Ultimate Alliance
Season 2 confirmed Hari Seldon (Jared Harris) engineered a huge scheme using mathematics and psychohistory to predict the future. He arranged his own death and kicked over sinister dominoes, so the warring factions from Anacreon and Thespis would unite. He wanted them to be the cornerstones of his Foundation, which wasn’t about curating knowledge, but creating a superhuman species ready to bring down the Empire.
Season 2 trailers have shown this new coalition training, seeking out weapons of mass destruction and prepping on Terminus. However, with Seldon’s hologram seen taunting Day, it remains to be seen if his alliance will play well with each other given the personalities (old and new) within. Or if, during these “Seldon Crises,” Seldon’s ego will get in the way. The image he’s projected from the Vault seems like that of a god, but there’s no telling if the alliance — and Foundation on the whole — will enjoy being manipulated.
Foundation Season 2 Will Test Gaal and Salvor
Season 1 ended with the shocking revelation Gaal (Seldon’s protégé) was actually the mother of Salvor (a war hero during the Foundation’s first crisis). They met when Gaal returned home to Synnax and thawed her daughter out of stasis. Season 2 trailers have shown them training, affirming both will be learning more about their predictive powers, and how to be the leaders this resistance requires.
They may end up questioning Seldon’s mission, though. That said, it’ll be sentimental seeing generations bridged, and the women learning more about Salvor’s past. Salvor will be intrigued by her dad, Raych, although hearing how Seldon used him as a pawn in Gaal’s fate may bring about some underlying resentment. Either way, both ladies have their hands full rallying the troops and fighting off unique monsters in a gorgeous series that’ll surely have viewers comparing to Dune and Star Wars.
Foundation Season 2 May Break Brother Day
Brother Day (played by Lee Pace) has been a very enthralling character, slowly realizing he doesn’t have the grip over the galaxy he’d like. Season 1 revealed there were flaws in the DNA of Cleon clones, leaving audiences curious to see how Day will deal with this flawed lineage. Season 2 trailers do seem to indicate he’ll be rather aggressive, maybe to prove to himself he’s the ultimate leader despite not being a pure copy.
However, Day has problems inside his royal court. With the android Demerzel ready to kill clones, such as the youngest in Dawn, not deemed worthy. It teases an enticing dynamic over whether this is a chance to restart the dynasty fresh and what the bot has planned. Day also has to watch out for folks like Queen Sareth wanting to see him fail. There are spies around, and while Dawn has corralled most of them, he still can’t predict who’s sabotaging his vision. It teases a distracted Day, who may not be able to reconcile the words of Dusk and a Dawn who was willing to abandon ship.
Foundation Season 2 premieres July 14 on Apple TV+.
