The latest poster for The Marvels includes Nick Fury, leading many to believe he’ll play a key role in the film’s narrative.
The promotional image includes the trio of Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), Monica Rambeau aka Photon (Teyonah Parris) and Kamala Khan aka Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani) towering above the visual while Nick Fury, once again played by Samuel L. Jackson takes center stage. Many have taken his featured slot on the poster as a sign that the ex-head of S.H.I.E.L.D. will play a significant part in the narrative although this remains pure speculation at the time of writing. Fury has appeared in both of The Marvels‘ trailers although his role in the story has yet to be clarified.
The Marvels‘ poster also includes a horde of flerkens surrounding Fury’s feet, with the beloved Goose leading the charge. The adorable alien is expected to have a much bigger role in the sequel as suggested by executive producer Mary Livanos. “Goose is her own person. She is full of surprises, and she certainly has a lot in store over the course of this story,” Livanos said. Goose already has a long history with Fury, having been the creature that gave him his scarred eye and, eventually, the Tesseract.
Jackson’s participation in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been long and fruitful, having first appeared all the way back in the original Iron Man in 2008. Currently, he’s leading the charge against the Skrulls in the Disney+ series Secret Invasion, which the actor promises is essential to set up his role in The Marvels. “This series has to happen so that The Marvels can happen. All these things are connected in an interesting sort of way,” Jackson said.
Secret Invasion director Ali Selim further addressed Fury’s future in The Marvels, revealing that Marvel Studios never placed hard rules on how the Disney+ show had to treat Jackson’s character. “They’re not protracted conversations [with The Marvels creative team],” Selim said. “It’s just simply, ‘Where do you need [Fury]? You need him here? Great.’ And then we write into that. So that kind of stuff is very simple because it’s all above my pay grade.”
The Marvels flies into theaters on Nov. 10. Secret Invasion is currently streaming on Disney+ with new episodes dropping every Wednesday.
