The animated movie Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem has gotten a radical new poster that honors the original feature film about the Heroes in a Half-Shell.
Back in 1990, the first live-action movie based on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was released in theaters. Promoting its release was an unforgettable poster featuring Michelangelo, Leonardo, Donatello, and Raphael peeking out from underneath a manhole cover, surrounded by the city’s skyscrapers. That same image has now been recreated with the Mutant Mayhem incarnations of the Ninja Turtles, courtesy of artist Matheuss Berant. The nostalgic poster is exclusively offered through Bottleneck Gallery and is now available, though they’re flying fast and expected to sell out quickly.
The film itself is also filled with Easter eggs and references to classic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, from the comic book series and the cartoon show from the 80s to the classic live-action film trilogy and beyond. It was even revealed ahead of the movie’s release that Vanilla Ice’s “Ninja Rap” would be featured in Mutant Mayhem, which is a nod to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: Secret of the Ooze. Production designer Yashar Kassai recently teased to Variety, “Our Holy Grail of the entire franchise has always been the late ’80s cartoon, the original series, and that really wacky toy line that came out during the early ’90s.”
TMNT: Mutant Mayhem Has Been Embraced by Critics and Fans
The film has been an instant hit with critics, standing tall with a score of 94% on the Tomatometer. That makes the movie the highest-rated film, critically, of every TMNT film. The audience score is the exact same as of this writing, also sitting at 94%. There must have been a lot of pressure to get this movie right, as it’s just the latest of several reboots for the franchise, but these reviews would suggest that director Jeff Rowe and Co. have a hit on their hands.
Paramount has been aware of the interest in TMNT: Mutant Mayhem. Before the film’s release, it was announced that a sequel is already in development. What’s more is that there will be a two-season spinoff series set to air on Nickelodeon. The show will serve as a bridge between the two films, and it has been described as taking time to follow each of the Ninja Turtles on their own, away from their siblings.
TMNT: Mutant Mayhem is now playing in movie theaters.
