The CW has released the official synopsis for the series finale of Riverdale.
Per TVLine, the upcoming twentieth and final episode of Riverdale Season 7 is titled “Goodbye, Riverdale” and is set to air on The CW on Wednesday, Aug. 23 at 9/8c. The synopsis reads as follows: “Back in [the] present day and longing for her former life in Riverdale, 86-year-old Betty turns to a special friend to help her relive her last day of senior year with her friends as they were, their memories restored.” At this time, it is unknown if Betty Cooper performer Lili Reinhart will portray the “present day” Betty in old age makeup or if the show will hire an older actor to play the elderly version of the fan-favorite character.
Riverdale‘s series finale synopsis seems to contradict recent comments made by Mädchen Amick — who stars as Betty Cooper’s mother Alice in The CW drama series. During an interview, Amick let slip that the final season would not return to the present day. “No, we don’t get out of the 1950s. I guess maybe that is a big spoiler,” said Amick in July 2023. “I will say you do experience the characters in different… dimensions, that you get to see a lot of closures that are outside of the 1950s. I can tease it that way. I think that’s saying enough.” It’s possible that what Amick was referring to in the latter half of her comment — “closures that are outside of the 1950s” — was her teasing an 86-year-old Betty Cooper.
Why Are Archie’s Pals ‘n’ Gals in the 1950s?
Riverdale‘s seventh and final season is a direct continuation of the show’s explosive Season 6 finale, which saw Cheryl Blossom successfully destroy Bailey’s Comet before it could crash into The Town with Pep! Unfortunately for Archie and his friends, the comet’s destruction somehow sent them back to 1955. In this new timeline, they are high school students once again and have no memory of their previous lives in the 2020s. This soft reboot of Riverdale allowed for the creatives to bring back formerly dead characters like Midge Klump, Hiram Lodge and Hal Cooper while recasting others like Dilton Doiley.
Riverdale Launched the ArchieVerse
Riverdale premiered in January 2017 on The CW. The fan-favorite CW show features a large ensemble cast led by KJ Apa as Archie Andrews, Camila Mendes as Veronica Lodge, Reinhart as Betty Cooper, Cole Sprouse as Jughead Jones, Madelaine Petsch as Cheryl Blossom, Casey Cott as Kevin Keller and Charles Melton as Reggie Mantle, among others. The success of Riverdale led to the creation of a shared universe, which includes Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and Katy Keene. A third series, a noir mystery drama series focusing on teen prodigy detective Jake Chang, was in development from 2020 to 2023.
The series finale of Riverdale airs on The CW on Wednesday, Aug. 23.
