Millie Bobby Brown’s Netflix movie Damsel is among six titles delayed due to the ongoing 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike putting a halt in film production and promotion.
According to What’s on Netflix, Brown’s feature film joins A Family Affair starring Nicole Kidman, Lift featuring Kevin Hart, Players starring Gina Rodriguez, Shirley with Regina King, and another Adam Sandler flick Spaceman, which have all been delayed until 2024. In Damsel, the British actress stars as Princess Elodie. The movie also stars Angela Bassett, Robin Wright, Ray Winstone, and Nick Robinson. Brown also serves as an executive producer. Filming wrapped up in the summer of 2022; however, it has been put back from October 2023 release date to some time in 2024. The rescheduled premiere of Damsel has not been announced as the writers’ and actors’ strikes continue to make waves in Hollywood.
Damsel Won’t Hit Netflix Until 2024
Damsel stars Brown in the lead role in which she portrays a devoted, dutiful damsel who consents to marry a charming prince. Little does she know that this seemingly fairytale-like scenario is, in fact, a trap. The royal family, driven by an age-old debt, had deceptively chosen her as a sacrificial offering. Left with no choice, she finds herself confined within a cave guarded by a fire-breathing dragon. Her survival now rests solely on her intellect and unyielding determination. The movie was first announced in 2020 but has yet to go on a promotional run due to the strikes.
Netflix, along with other streamers, has been a major target of the current strikes by Hollywood writers and actors. Orange Is the New Black actors Alysia Reiner, Beth Dover, Emma Myles, Diane Guerrero, Taryn Manning, Lea DeLaria, and Kimiko Glenn have opened up about their pay disparity with the popular Netflix show. They disclosed that many of them still had to maintain day jobs due to discrepancies in pay and minimal residuals they received. One incident that brought attention to this issue was when Kimiko shared a TikTok video, revealing that she had received a mere $27.30 in overseas royalties. This revelation was later corroborated by her co-stars Matt McGorry and Beth, sparking a widespread conversation about the unequal pay facing actors involved in streamable content.
Netflix still has a slate of original movies coming in 2023. Heart of Stone, a crime thriller featuring Gal Gadot, is coming to Netflix on Aug. 11. Other titles slated for August include You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah!, The Monkey King, and Choose Love.
Millie Bobby Brown’s latest movie, Enola Holmes 2, is currently streaming on Netflix.
