For the fans hoping to see Edge of Tomorrow finally get a sequel, Emily Blunt is making it clear that she’s not the one standing in the way of the potential movie happening.

Before the SAG-AFTRA strike, Blunt had participated in an interview with Josh Horowitz for the Happy Sad Confused podcast, and the full conversation has now been posted online. During the chat, Horowitz brings up Edge of Tomorrow, and Blunt is quick to recall how much of a strain the heavy exo-suit she had to wear for the movie was on her body. She noted, “I don’t forget. No, my back still tweaks out on me sometimes, you know?”

Despite the back pain that came with filming the first movie, Blunt remains hopeful that Edge of Tomorrow 2 will happen. When Horowitz brought up the possibility of a sequel, the Oppenheimer star reiterated her interest in doing another movie. She confirmed how she’s even read a screenplay for Edge of Tomorrow 2 and noted how she’s game to return whenever Tom Cruise is ready to make the potential film. “I wish there could be [a sequel],” Blunt says. “There was [a script] that Doug [Liman] kind of slithered over to me… I would love to make it a reality, but I just don’t know when, or how, or how many Mission: Impossibles does [Tom Cruise] need?”

Noting how the character her co-star played was different from his usual roles, Blunt added, “Come back to the side where you can be… you know, wasn’t he brilliant [in Edge of Tomorrow]? He was amazing as the cowardly hero… I adored him. He was the best.” On making the sequel, Blunt then added, “I’m so ready. I’m not the impediment. I promise.”

Will Edge of Tomorrow 2 Ever Happen?

Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt in Edge of Tomorrow

Directed by Doug Liman, Edge of Tomorrow was written by Christopher McQuarrie, Jez Butterworth, and John-Henry Butterworth. The sci-fi action flick, released in 2014, is set in an alternate reality where Europe has been conquered by an alien race. Cruise plays a public relations officer caught in a time loop during the invasion wherein he attempts to learn from each repeating experience how to overcome the attackers. Blunt co-stars as a soldier who helps train Cruise’s character to become a better fighter. The movie was a moderate success at the box office and was met with positive reviews, and while sequel talks have gone back for years, it remains unclear if Edge of Tomorrow 2 will ever really happen.

Edge of Tomorrow is currently streaming on both Netflix and Max.
