The following contains spoilers for Invincible Iron Man #10, on sale from Marvel on September 27
The wedding of Emma Frost and Tony Stark is almost upon us, and Marvel has released a first look at some of the events leading up to the marriage of one of the key members of the X-Men and one of the key members of the Avengers. X-Men writer Gerry Duggan, one of the chief architects of the X-Men line of comics, is also writing Invincible Iron Man, so he has been able to tie the two books together well as part of the Fall of X crossover event.
During this year’s Hellfire Gala, the annual celebration of mutantkind on the mutant island of Krakoa, the X-Men were dealt a devastating blow when the anti-mutant organization, Orchis, attacked the ceremony, killing most of the newly announced team of X-Men. Orchis blackmailed Charles Xavier to use his telepathic powers to force the hundreds of thousands of mutants on the island to teleport away, or Orchis would trigger a failsafe it included in the medication that the X-Men have been producing for millions of humans, killing them all. So Xavier forced most of the mutants on the island through the teleportation gates to parts unknown. Some mutants, including Emma Frost, were able to resist Xavier’s command. They escaped on their own, along with Wilson Fisk, who was at the Hellfire Gala with his mutant wife, Typhoid Mary. These mutants are now working underground as the X-Men, while Emma Frost has taken an undercover job as Hazel Kendall, an assistant to Tony Stark.

This September, though, Tony and Emma will be getting married. Marvel’s First Look has some preview pages that might shed light on why these two major characters are taking such a dramatic step in their relationship.
In the preview pages, we see Tony Stark encounter Wilson Fisk at an event. Fisk is now the White King of the Hellfire Club. Emma almost abandons the ring that hides her mutant powers when she sees Feilong, a member of Orchis. Tony keeps her from doing so. We also see Tony using his new Stealth Armor to attack some sort of facility.
We also see Tony and Emma share a kiss, as well as reflect upon their past, with Tony in his earliest armor and Emma in her villainous “White Queen” era. It still remains to be seen why, exactly, the two will get married, but these first look pages at least set the scene for the nuptials, with Tony and Emma obviously growing close, and Tony actively trying to help the X-Men at a time when Orchis has turned most of the world against mutantkind.
