Godzilla Minus One Trailer Brings Back the King of the Monsters

Cookbook Planner

Toho has released the official trailer for Godzilla Minus One.

Godzilla Minus One is coming to North American theaters in December, and months ahead of the release, the trailer provides a new sneak peek. Notably, the film is the first domestic Godzilla film released in Japan since 2016’s Shin Godzilla. Little is shown of the King of the Monsters himself in the trailer, though fans do get a look at the panic and destruction he’s bringing to the city with his return. The timing of his arrival also couldn’t be any worse, as the plot picks up in the aftermath of World War II, with Japan’s economic state reduced to zero following the nuclear bombings of the country.

Takashi Yamazaki wrote and directed the film in addition to working on the visual FX with Kiyoko Shibuya. The cast of Godzilla Minus One includes Ryunosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe, Yuki Yamada, Munetaka Aoki, Hidetaka Yoshioka, Sakura Ando, and Kuranosuke Sasaki.

Godzilla Has a Milestone Anniversary Approaching

Godzilla Minus One‘s release also comes ahead of the 70th anniversary of Godzilla. Toho is also celebrating the anniversary with the release of a new Blu-ray box set which will include all 36 of the company’s Godzilla movies. At this time, it’s still unclear if Godzilla Minus One will be a standalone film or if it’s intended to be a part of a new franchise. The movie also comes at a time with multiple Godzilla projects in the works elsewhere, as just last month, Apple TV+ unveiled a first look at the upcoming series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, which is set in the same universe as the Godzilla and King Kong movies in Legendary’s MonsterVerse.

Stateside, another new film in the MonsterVerse will also be arriving next year. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is currently slated for a release in theaters on April 12, 2024. Directed by Adam Wingard, the film serves as the follow-up to 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong. Collectively, the movies in the MonsterVerse series have collected nearly $2 billion at the global box office, and the next film will undoubtedly cross that mark.

Godzilla Minus One will be released in North America on Dec. 1, 2023. That follows its world premiere at the Tokyo International Film Festival on Nov. 1 with its release in Japanese theaters on Nov. 3. As for the 70th anniversary Blu-ray set, that will become available on March 23, 2024.
