Fantastic Four Artist Alex Ross Wins a Reuben Award

Alex Ross was the recipient of a Reuben Award in the Graphic Novel Division for his work on Fantastic Four: Full Circle.

The Reuben Awards, named after Pulitzer Prize winning cartoonist Rube Goldberg, are given out yearly by the National Cartoonists Society, including the prestigious Outstanding Cartoonist of the Year. The Society also honors recipients across twelve divisions in the field of comics: Online Comic (Long Form), Online Comic (Short Form), Newspaper Comic Strip, Newspaper Panel, Comic Book, Graphic Novel, Book Illustration, Magazine/Newspaper Illustration, Editorial Cartoon, Gag Cartoon, and Variety Entertainment.

Fantastic Four: Full Circle, released in 2022, is the first graphic novel that Ross both wrote and illustrated in his long-running career as a comic artist. The story sees The Fantastic Four journey into the Negative Zone, where they encounter a villain who threatens the fate of the cosmos. Speaking with CBR at the time of its release, Ross described the graphic novel as “the fullest test of my work done in the more traditional style of pen-and-ink with flat color.” The graphic novel was a national bestseller and was named one of the best graphic novels of the year by the Washington Post.

Alex Ross’ Comics Career

Ross’ career in comics has spanned over thirty years, and he has become well-known for his unique and realistic drawing style that stands out among the often stylized works in the world of comics. Ross first worked for Marvel Comics as a cover artist in 1992 and had work published in DC Comics in 1994. Along with his work for Marvel and DC, Ross has also worked on comics for Image Comics, America’s Best Comics, Dynamite Entertainment and Dark Horse, among others. One of his most notable works over the course of his career has been Kingdom Come, a 1996 four-issue limited series that was part of DC’s Elseworlds.

In addition to his 2022 Reuben Award, Ross also took home the award in the Comic Book Division in 1998 for Superman: Peace on Earth. He is also a 12 time Eisner Award winner and 11 time Harvey Award winner.
