The anime adaptation of the massively popular webtoon series Solo Leveling released new details for its upcoming 2024 premiere with a new trailer.
The two-and-a-half-minute promotional video gives fans a sneak peek into the beginnings of Sung Jinwoo, who has garnered a reputation as the weakest hunter in the world and how he struggles to overcome his title with the help of a mysterious system. The trailer additionally revealed the names of several key staff members working on the adaptation, such as monster designer Hirotaka Tokuda, sub character designer Chiaki Furuzumi and visual effects director Daichi Iseki.
Based on the South Korean digital comic series of the same name, Solo Leveling is set in an alternate modern era where mystical “gates” have opened all around the world. The series was originally a web novel written by author Chugon and was later adapted into a webtoon under KakaoPage in 2018, with illustrations drawn by the late artist Jang Sung-rak, aka DUBU. The series quickly became one of the most popular webtoons of the genre, with readers praising Solo Leveling for its striking visual panels and gorgeous art style.
What to Expect From Solo Leveling
A-1 Pictures will handle the production of the anime adaptation, with director Shunsuke Nakashige helming the project and writer Noboru Kimura overseeing the series’ composition. Solo Leveling‘s music will also be produced by acclaimed artist Hiroyuki Sawano, who will be working with the series’ sound director Ryo Tanaka. Voice actor Taito Ban will provide the voiceover work for Sung Jinwoo, alongside co-star Reina Ueda who will portray Jinwoo’s ally and romantic interest, Cha Hae-In.
A synopsis for the anime adaptation reads, “It’s been over a decade since the sudden appearance of the ‘gates’–the paths that connect our world with a different dimension. Since then, certain humans have awakened to supernatural powers. We call these individuals ‘hunters.’ Hunters make their living by using their powers to conquer dungeons inside the gates. In this world of tough customers, the low-ranked hunter Sung Jinwoo is known as ‘the weakest hunter of all mankind.’ One day, Jinwoo gets fatally injured when he runs into high-rank double dungeons hidden within a low-rank dungeon. Just then, a mysterious quest window appears in front of him. On the verge of death, Jinwoo decides to accept the quest and starts leveling up…while the others aren’t.”
Solo Leveling premieres January 2024 and will be available to stream on Crunchyroll.
